There is 2 petrol tanks inside of one, you have to charm the 2nd tank out so you can fill it up, usually a snake charmer will do this for about £19.28.

There is no reserve tank. There is a reserve position on the fuel tap on some bikes.

The "on" position draws fuel through a metal pipe that sticks up bout 2 " into the fuel tank. The "res" position draws fuel right from the bottom of the tank, along with any bits of grit, water and other shit that's lurking about in the bottom of the tank.

When you hit reserve, there is still about 2" of fuel left in the tank.

Top tube is the "main tank" and when the fuel level goes below that, you need to switch to reserve which allows fuel from the lower tube down to the carbs/fuel pump.

i ran out of fuel the other day, turned the bike onto reserve and the bastard thing wouldnt start, had to go and get a jerry can and some fuel to get going again... Any idea why the reserve didnt work?

Because the carbs are empty and won't be filled until the engine starts. You should have selected prime first, started it up, then switched to reserve.

Prime is only for vacuum taps. If it has no vacuum tap you don't need to prime.
