Yeah, I found that funny too.
Its made me think of a question.
Is it technically possibly to make a new lid? I mean. if you had the correct shaped mould you could make one out of carbon fibre sheets. As long as you do it properly you will have one hell of a strong helmet. Would that be legal? ____________________ Many Thanks

Technicly possible, yes.
Wouldnt think it would be wise at all unless you were a specialist in that specific field. Legality wise for road use it has to be approved in some way shape or form - not too sure what it's called or the testing process to get something approved.
I'd hazard a guess at it being insanely expensive though & when Nitro are knocking out 5 star SHARP rated full carbon lids at £189.99 retail the cost of materials/testing/approval etc would massively overtake the cost of buying multiple ready made lids. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Or is of a type manufactured for use by persons on motor cycles which by virtue of its shape, material and construction could reasonably be expected to afford to the wearer a degree of protection from accidental injury similar to or greater than that provided by a helmet of a type prescribed by [the actual approved ones].
The thing to note is that that BSI 6658:1985 is the only explicitly approved standard. ECE 22.05, which you'll find on essentially all helmets, is only implicitly approved because it "offers in use equivalent levels of safety, suitability and fitness for purpose", which is much the same as the clause above.
Personally I'd argue that the shell isn't as important as the polystyrene bowl inside. <buckethelmet.jpg>
