For this Monday, me, on my Hyosung GT 650r, and my mate on his GS 500 have an idea: we plan to set off from Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, to a campsite near Penzance, stay the night, and go back to Melton on Tuesday.

We are thinking of going on the motorway as far as Exeter, then going on some of the smaller roads...

Does this sound doable?

Yes.

I rode from Maidstone to Plymouth on the R1 to get on a ferry to Spain. It is mundane and I do not want to do it again. I'd have had more fun bashing my knob against a cactus.

But, if you fancy the trip, go for it. Personally any biking trips I want to do will now be done abroad. Nothing compares.

I'd consider staying a day down there though...

Well it will be my first motorway journey over 40 miles, so it should be more interesting for me...

Motorways are so boring. If you must go to the south west then make it take 4 or 5 days and stick to small A or B roads.

If you only have the 2 days then go somewhere more local. 200 miles a day of smaller roads is a sensible target.

Why stay just one night?

You turn up, fed up of riding because of the long and boring motorways. Set up camp. You have an afternoon to kill, have some fun. However you have to head off to bed early to be up in time to pack up before chuck out time in the morning and then ride back?

I'd personally want at least 2 nights, otherwise I think it'd be a bit pointless. That's just me though.

That said, motorways are extremely easy riding. Doing more than 40 miles on motorway is absolutely no hardship on anything but your arse and boredom levels. It certainly will not be interesting Very Happy

I've ridden from London to Cornwall and back again in the same day. Completely doable. The primary limit will be your own discomfort.

Wear earplugs.

I've done 620 miles in a day with a pillion on a GSXR600.

850 on a Hornet in a day. (That was a lot of fuel stops).

People like marmalade and sickpup who ride for a living I'm sure will have done more than that.

You'll be fine, as above, wear earplugs. I find that after you've done about 300 the miles just click by... It's not exciting and I wouldn't do it for fun, but it is do-able.

I agree with the above. It will be very mundane on the motorway. The only way to spice up a long motorway journey is to ride very fast and act like a knob.

Once you hit Exeter there are no more motorways anyway, just A or B roads. Personally, I would spend a couple of days riding down on smaller roads and then leave another couple of days to explore Cornwall as the roads are generally beaut and have plenty of photo oportunities, especially around Lands End and St Michaels Mount.

I reckon that by the time you reach the nice twisties of Cornwall you'll be too tired and bored to enjoy them properly and you'll just want to get off and sleep.

Weather may be an issue too. I once did Southampton to Newcastle in November and I was glad my arse was numb because I couldn't feel the cold and wet that I'd been suffering since 10 minutes into the journey...

I think motorways are fun! I saw James May in a TVR a few weeks ago on the M5, and years ago I saw the whole cast of High school Musical in their tour bus Razz

As long as you all think it is perfectly doable, i'm happy. Weather it's fun or not is another matter...If it's dull I can entertain myself by shouting abuse at my mate through the intercom on the way Very Happy

120mph wheelies through the traffic make it more fun. So I've heard, I can't wheelie.

60mph wheelie through standstill traffic on the wrong side of the road on the Isle of Wight....

That is entertaining Laughing

Just yes, piece of cake but why not go somewhere a bit closer and make it worthwhile, make Penzance a trip for when you have more time, there is lots to see and do and making this one a first long trip you'll end up doing nothing but riding, sleeping in a tent and riding home.

Take local roads for Llangollen then! If you want to make a bit of time up or something A5 to Telford, just watch it between Cannock and Gailey island, 50mph, about 10 speed cameras in that stretch.

If you do that route keep an eye out for a little red CG, it'll be me

It seems it was actually a blessing in disguise that I couldn't go to Cornwall. Had a great time in Wales...went on the horseshoe pass, then on some twisty roads to Bangor, then went on some amazing roads in Snowdinia Smile

My neck and right wrist ached a bit on the Motorway though Confused
