What shall i do?

Recently my chain snapped, it has sheared off the water pump, and some of the engine casing. I took it to my local dealer, and he said its going to need new engine cases, complete strip and reuilt with new gaskets, said its going to cost thousands.

Don't know what to do, shall i try get a new engine?, If so where from?

or should i just buy new casings?

To add insult to injury, i recently bought new chain and sprockets, a new rear tyre and an exhaust for it.

you could always try fro a recon engine

or even second hand parts from a breaker

get the manual and do the work yourself - it will be very rewarding (and frustrating)

So it just damaged the engine casing and took out the water pump? surely those parts cannot cost thousands? unless the water pump damaged other parts of the engine when it got ripped out

Im thinking about getting a donor motor, anyone know of any good breakers?

You could always try pricing the parts up yourself and doing the work, it will always be lots cheaper than a dealer. Get the dealer to do you a full quote including parts and labour. You will usually have to pay for the quote but it's worth doing.

I have always found them to be very good and helpful. They can usually offer you a discount on the parts prices if you are willing to wait a couple of weeks for them to ship direct from Japan, or pay more for the parts straight away.

Thanks for the replies everyone, found a guy on Visordown, who has a s/h hornet engine, he has taken the gearbox out of it to fix his bike and said he would give me the rest for 100 quid . Ive been told to ring the dealer back at half 4, thats when they said everything will be priced up, Most probably i will be paying all the money for labour, as engine needs to be completely stripped down, then rebuilt with new gaskets etc, plus Lings are one of the most expensive places for parts i have just found out . I may try davidsilverspares, for gaskets etc.

Will post some pics up tomorow, when hopefully i get the bike back

Don't know if this will help but from my experience try pricing up new bits from dealer as well as parts from breakers. Found some bits for my bike brand new were cheaper at dealer I'd also use nothing less than genuine gaskets for a rebuild

Just got a call from Lings, they quoted me 1800 quid plus, said parts came to 1400 alone, and the rest is labour.

Bit of a disaster , hopefully i will be able to pick up a s/h engine from a breakers, and rebuild it with parts off of the donor engine.

Will get pics friday (when i get the bike back)

They picked the bike up from my house, to the dealership about 10 miles, said it would be 30 quid for the quote and transport.

Does this sound about right?

Hi

I would say look for a good second hand engine. I take it that the chain has smashed the crank cases, and they are probably something silly like £1k from Honda.

If you are lucky then the Hornet engine can have the gearbox removed / replaced without splitting the crankcases which would make the engine for the VDer worth having. If the crankcases need splitting then you are looking at a fairly large bill (probably around £100 just for the gaskets, for example), which might make it cheaper just to buy a complete decent Hornet engine.

Doing an engine swap would take a while but not be too difficult.

Does the Hornet use the CBR600FM style engine?

Hi

While parts might fit I suspect the whole engine wouldn't. For example the 250 Hornet is meant to use the CBR250 engine, but the carbs go on to the head at a very different angle. Suspect the head castings are different.

I have a manual for a CBR600FM. Looking at that the cases have to be split to put the gearbox in place.

Have you got any photos of the damage, is the casing leaking oil at all? except where the water pump fits in.
