Here is an odd one for you.

Draining the oil on the lad's DR125SM last night and as usual, out comes the drain plug, a stream of oil runs out, but then a spring drops out of the drain hole, into the pan??

OK, I thinks, that is not good.

Stripped down most of the accessable engine and gearbox bits with the unit still in the bike and nothing appears to be out of place, all operated as it should and nothing obviously loose or rattling which would indicate a missing tension giver.

the spring looks like a clutch spring, but all 5 are there on the back of the clutch unit and all there operates fine too.

Any ideas would be most welcome, as it is all back together and running fine, riding well (only up and down the drive), no rattles, no squeaks, just a normally sounding and driving bike.

I am at a loss and Google does not appear to be any help, so over the the Gurus on here to shed some light on the subject.

Cheers

Mike

Are you sure the spring was not in the pan before you drained the bike? I doubt an item the size of a clutch spring would readily come out of a drain plug even if it was stood on end and that is not likely is it?

What you have probably undone is the "wrong" sump bolt.

There is one on the side, likely to have once had a small mesh filter. There is also a sump plug on the bottom. Thumbs Up

Yep, this sounds about right.

Undid the bottom one where the spring came out of when draining.

On stripping the side of the engine off, did wonder why there was another bolt filled hole.

Explains that dilema and no panic on riding again.

Many Many thanks guys.

Big help again, as usual.

Sometimes manufacturers put 'sump plugs' on the underneath with a spring behind it that's not a sump bolt at all but part of the gear change mechanism which

should not be unscrewed under any circumstances
unless part of a total engine strip down.

I'd would read the workshop manual before doing anything else to ascertain exactly what it is that you have disturbed.

Yeah I've had a couple of bikes that had this feature. Usually protrudes at an oblique angle though and not easily mistaken for a sump plug.
