I'm looking at changing jobs and today I had a 2nd interview for a field position and it went well.

The company don't give company cars but instead a car allowance and a fuel card.

I wondered what if, I sell my current car and using the cash from the sale and the allowance from them (assuming its paid upfront) I purchase a new car but then decide to leave the company after 6 months. What happens to the car/money they gave me?

alternatively, if the allowance is something paid over a period of time then I guess it doesn't matter.

anyone have a job with similar "benefits"

Usually an allowance is paid per mile covered for business usage so you'll get something like 40p per mile probably the month following you putting in your mileage claim.

I had a car allowance at my last job paid monthly, I think its different if you get paid the amount up front and have to repay anything they deem owing.

I expected that "car allowance" meant mileage allowance but it doesn't in this particular job as a fuel card is given also to pay for the fuel.

The allowance they refer to is for a vehicle, either to pay for one or the maintenance of your own car

Any car allowance that I have been entitled to has been a taxable amount that is paid monthly toward the ownership and upkeep of a vehicle.

Current post would pay me a taxable sum of £250 per month, for which I must have a roadworthy vehicle (at least 4 door, under 7 years old, no soft tops etc.) available for business use.

Did it for a few years, but when you've got to fork out for a full set of tyres, it makes you realise how far your monthly allowance doesn't go.

Your car allowance won't be paid upfront, as Cunnington said it's basically just an extra amount that's added onto your salary (so subject to full tax and NI) each month to allow you to keep a vehicle and there are usually contractual provisos about what sort of vehicle it can be.

Fuel card means they will provide all the fuel for the vehicle so you won't be able to claim any mileage allowance and you will also be taxed (via your tax code) on the fuel that is deemed to be for personal use.

thanks for the info, really helpful

At this point I don't know if there is any required spec of car but I'm certain I'd need to change the car should I be offered the job as it would probably need to be large to carry tools, spare parts for work but presumably also a diesel as well. Somehow I don't think my civic type r would be ideal
