Hey guys.
I brought my cbr about 2 weeks ago and up till now it's been fine, but yesterday it was raining pretty hard and i was on my way home in it. i mounted the pavement and i had the clutch in ready to roll it along into my place and it cut out.. Now it wont start. It makes the turning over noise but it just wont kick in, the battery is full and i have tested it but i'm like brand new to bikes so i don't know where to start :/ Any suggestions ? if you think i should clean or do something to a part can you give me a lil tutorial as to where it is and how to get to it
Thanks

This would be better in The Workshop section, but;
How have you checked the battery?
Have you got a spark?

i have a reader that you put on each terminal and it showed a decent 12.5 V reading, and how should i check it properly ? just pull the cable off, take the plug out and lick the end ? lol

If i took the plug out and connected the cable again would that create a spark when i hit the starter ?

Not heard of a CBR having issues in the rain...

Under the tank however is a plethora of cables which should be covered, lazy people don't refit the cover.

Worth probably checking the colour of the spark plug, connecting the lead to it and grounding the plug against the frame then pressing the starter to check for a spark.

Laughing No, sorry using a multimeter is the right way, it's never clear on how techy a person is on here, so I tend to start at a real noobie level. We almost got someone (Jivebunny) to do exactly what you joked, but some bugger went and told him the truth Evil or Very Mad

Try as Paddy suggests, ground the spark plug (not on your tongue), press the starter, and check for a spark.

Ok guys good news, I've put the battery back in and when i hold he starter it's still not kicking in unless i open the throttle fully and then hold it, it takes about 2-3 seconds then it starts and then flys up to high revs. Once i slowly reduce throttle the revs slow down, and if i close the throttle fully it shuts off again :/ ??

Fueling issue ? have you got enough fuel or have you run it empty at some point ? water in the tank etc etc..

Lol its not been that heavy but some people leave there bikes out in all weathers and after time you get condensation and shite going on..

Fuel pump and fuel feed lines / filters blocked sounds like the engine isbeing starved of fuel hence only really going when you give it a load of throttle and and stalling etc im taking it as fuel injection and not carbs..

Is it a carburettor or fuel injection cbr? Sounds like a blocked up carb to me. Could also be other crap stuck in the fuel system, do you have a fuel filter on the bike, if so change it!

edit: Just saw your latest post. Might be a pilot jet blocked up then...

I'd say the rain is just a red herring. It certainly sounds like a fuel supply/mixture issue. First try squirting something combustible around the air intake/carb air box collars. If nothing, then check the carbs themselves, floats, jets etc.

That's twice today I've offered exactly the same advice Shocked

Drain the carb float bowl into a clear glass bottle.

See if you have 2 liquids in there, should separate if its fuel and water.

Wouldn't be the first CBR125 to get a blocked idle jet, they do seem (on experience and anecdote) to be prone to it.

While you're investigating it, I'd suggest spending a few £££ on fitting a filter into your fuel line.

Ok so i had to go to work yesterday and couldn't check the jets. I drained the carb and it was pure petrol no water and it's starting abit easier and I can get it to turn over and stay running with about 50% choke but it stays at 500-1k revs and cuts out if I adjust the choke or throttle. Does this help locate the problem or should I still check the jets ( of which I don't know how Sad )

No guarantees, but those symptoms sound like workmate's CBR that had a clogged idle jet.

Sorry, no how-to from me, he revved it into a Honda dealer and got mugged for it.

Idle jets are about £3. If removing the old one and blowing through it doesn't unblock it, just buy a new one.

Take carb off.

Fine an old piece of wire, strip the outer coating and get a few strands of the wire and remove the idle jet, all of them 1 by one if you feel, poke the wire through the hole in the jet and give it a nice wiggle and spray with carb cleaner/wd40 or equivalent.

Nice one, great job on diving in and sorting it out. Thumbs Up

As noted, they do seem particularly prone to it. I would definitely recommend throwing a fuel filter in there.

What he said ^ or if you've got one, replace it...it clearly isn't doing its job anymore. You'll need to find out what size fuel line your bike uses though (internal diameter). Here is a 6mm one: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORCYCLE-MOTORBIKE-6mm-ROUND-FUEL-FILTER-UNIVERSAL-/320451996874?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4a9c6d6cca
