Why did you clean the carbs? Was it idling OK before the clean? Is the air filter clean? Is there a fuel filter and is it clogged?

More info required.

I was putting a new piston i just did it as it was a straight foward job to do... it revs its head off and it runs fine with choke on. Maybe the rubber pipe from the carb to the engine is split or perished causing a vacume leak?

Possibly. When you replaced the piston did you reuse the base gasket or use a brand new one? If you reused it, or didn't clean the mating faces perfectly, then air can leak in there.

"it revs its head off and it runs fine with choke on" - OP

So you know exactly whats causing the problem then. Assuming you're working fervently to fix your transport, have you found the fault yet?
