It just occurred to me to mention this, seeing as I'm doing the forum thing today, as it might help someone at some point...
After my old Honda had been sat up for a few months over winter nothing on earth would get the bloody thing started, and I actually wore out the already tired starter motor doing it.
So while I awaited the arrival of my new starter, I stripped the carbs down and cleaned them as per Larry the carb guys instructions (this guy know a lot about deep cleaning carbs), as the float bowls were full of suspicious looking green slime, and the bike hadn't long been in service after a 7 year retirement.
After fitting the new starter I got the bike started up easily, but it wouldn't respond to throttle at all, and had a really nasty lumpy idle. It would run marginally better with choke on but inevitably would foul up the plugs and cut out. So off with the carbs again, another thorough clean with brake cleaner and compressed air, but no matter what I did to those carbs I couldn't get the bike to run right. I must have had them on and off about five times so convinced was I that they were the problem, and I swear to f*ck brand new carbs aren't as clean as mine are now (or were).
Anyway, to cut an already long story slightly shorter.... - it was the battery. Whenever I'd started the bike, I'd jumped it off a van battery then quickly disconnected the leads, the bike would then run shit. If I charged the bike battery for about 2 days the bike would run fine for five minutes then start to play up again, I guess the battery was so uncharged that no amount of charging would satisfy it, and it was sucking all the power from the charging system. So to cure this problem, in the absence of sufficient funds to replace the bike battery, I have now removed my pillion seat and ratchet strapped the van battery to my bike, inside a hold-all with holes cut into it for straps and cables to go through, so it just looks like a bag strapped to the back. It adds a bit of weight but I don't half have some starting power now! If I ever ran out of fuel or broke down, I could probably make it home on the starter motor alone!
So, the lesson to be learned from this is.... ?

And this doesn't do any long term damage?

Both probably the same voltage, and as far as amps goes it is the bikes electrics drawing them not the battery pumping them out. Should be fine.

All the best

Ah fair play, size wise though I have no idea how you'd get it on the bike, battery is massive lol

Still going to be a lot smaller than a pillion - probably a bit less volume than a small top box.

cant quite remember but the cx has a cdi ign system, which only needs a battery to whizz the engine over fast enough to make the cdi system work ( and carbs etc ).................some cdi systemed bikes have a kick starter which works....ie the bike will start on a kick start so system must be capable of providing a good spark at relatively slow speeds, rate of change........etc.

so battery only needs to be big enough to start the bike, with some reserve for cold winter mornings etc....

how do you start the van now?

Sadly, I've been looking into this a fair bit for other areas - yes, that's cranking amps.
So, yes, it could run all of those. Cranking amps figures are for 30 seconds - it may just manage that if you're lucky.

You've probably got about 100ah battery. But you're only supposed to drain it a maximum of half power.
So that's 50ah @ 12v or so, giving 600watt hours.
A PS3 uses around 200w. A plasma TV, maybe 400w. Add in the inverter etc and you've around 800w usage.

However, the quicker you use power relative to the battery size, the less power you have. At 800w you're probably only going to have about 20ah usable.

So, You can run just a plasma TV and a PS3 from your bike battery for about 18 minutes.

HTH Very Happy
