Had just been for a quick lap around the TT course before going to work. As I was coming the final straight, I decided to overtake a van that was in front of me. Now at this general area, the road turns from no speed limit down to a 40 limit. As I passed the van I realised I had misjudged how much road I had left to get my speed down before I passed the 40 sign.

Then I noticed mr plod standing further down the road with his speed gun pointing at me, so I hit the brakes even harder in an attempt to reduce my speed quicker but, I was obviously too late as he signaled me to pull over, which I duly did. Had me banged to rights and recorded me doing 61mph in the 40mph zone.

Okay, I thought, I'll just take it on the chin as a lesson learned, as I don't have a case to argue. So I'll just pay the fine, £60 I thought to myself and 3 points....Wrong. It turns out the minimum fine over here is £150 Shocked plus I was told it'll probably be higher due to how much over the speed limit I was. Cop reckons I'm looking at around the £200 mark as well as the 3 points.

So I have spent the rest of the day extremely pissed off. Evil or Very Mad

I'm not comlaining about getting caught so much (although it is easy pickings in an area that's safe to be doing that speed) but, that's one cnut of an OTT speeding punishment, I'm thinking to myself.

I'd be minded to just ignore it, and if anything ever comes of it in the Real World, go heavy on the "I have no recollection of these alleged events, would you care to paddle over here and put all six of your fingers on a bible in a civilised court?" gambit.

Got caught myself on the course a few years back on Sulby straight. It went to court, had to be heard by a deemster (Judge). Cost me £350!

Unfortunately, I now live here and the "justice"system here has little else to occupy itself with, other than trivial matters such as this. So there's no chance of ignoring it and hoping it'll go away.....it won't. Sad

It's not so much the getting caught that bothers me so much. It's the fact that I have been involved in two crashes were I was found not at fault (one smidsy pulling out in front of me writting off my bike and another hitting me while stationary at a junction causing £3,500 worth of damage and both accidents put me in hospital) and neither driver was prosecuted. Yet I will get hit with 3 points and, as I have now been informed, up to £360 fine (£150 + £10 for every 1mph over the limit) for going over the limit in perfect conditions with nothing but farmland around me, as I hadn't reached the approaching residential area.

Just gotta bite the bullet though, as much as it hurts. Mad

Yeah...I was told that was one of my options but, may as well just save the hassle as I'm banged to rights and admit it then pay it.

I'm pissed off at the price though. I was thinking 3 points and £60 fine was going to hurt.

Seems a reasonable Local Fine for Local People then.

.
A mate of mine was in court last week for speeding. (in a car) He escaped being jailed by the skin of his teeth. Shocked

But he was recorded at 161 mph on the M6 the silly bugger. Rolling Eyes

His fine was only £80 + costs. They did however ban him for 3 years though. Crying or Very sad

Ouch!....but as you say, silly bugger. We all have the ability to fk up from time to time though.

As pissed as I am over the size of my fine, I must admit that the only comforting words that came from the copper were "you won't lose you licence".

Hillberry is one of the few parts of the TT course where I agree with the speed limit. At this point you have just had a 12 mile run over the mountain with no speed restriction and approaching Hillberry Corner which is the No2 accident blackspot on the course. Out of all non racing accidents that occurred on the course over a 3 year period 7 of them happened at Hillberry, including 2 fatalities, caused by carrying too much speed into the corner.

If you get caught speeding at Hillberry then you have very poor obs, the corner is clearly visible from the exit of Brandish Corner and is one of the points on the course where you might 'reasonably expect' to find a copper with a speed gun.

Local laws, local justice. It's well known that penalties for speeding are much higher on the island than they are in the UK. Lucky you weren't caught dealing a bit of weed instead, that might get you 6 months in the UK, 6 years in the Island or get you hanged in Malaysia.

Errr...... Yes you are, that's why you've started a new thread after posting it here:
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=276780

Edit:
The Manx Grand Prix Festival starts next Saturday. If you're on the island during the two week festival then watch out for speed traps on the TT course at the following locations:

Ago's Leap, exit of Union Mills, Crosby Church, Douglas Road Corner Kirk Michael, Rhencullen, Sulby Straight, School Road Ramsey, Hillberry Corner, Signpost Corner, The Nook.
There may be other places but these are the locations around the course where you might reasonably expect to find police with radar equipment.

They appear to be doing a very similar thing in the Isle of Man I found out at my expense today Crying or Very sad

How does the above constitute complaining, when I was merely commenting about something that happened to me in another thread on a similar topic?

Also, take note at the time of the above post and the time I started my thread. I think you'll see that I created my tbread before that post, not after.

And yes, it was poor obs on my part. As I said, I wanted to get infront of the van ahead of me. The reason for this is because I dislike being behind a vehicle such as this as they tend to obscure your view of the road ahead. Hence why I hadn't seen the speed trap up ahead until I had got in front of it.

I also would have and did have my speed down by the time I reached the bend at brandish corner, if I didn't I would also be getting done for running down the copper. They literally caught me just over the 40 zone as I was braking to slow down.

As I said, I made a bad judgement call and thought I could complete the overtake and get my speed back down before the 40 zone sign. I didn't, my bad and my fault. I am aware that most laws here carry a heavier penalty than the UK but, was unaware that the speeding fines were heavier. I learned the hard way. It just seems excessive to me, that's all Im saying really but, that's the way it is here, so I'll take the 3 points and the hefty fine and pay it when it arrives through the post. [/b]

Speeding laws are fine to ignore, but if you get caught you're a horrific person and daring to comment on the ridiculous situation is verboten. Standard BCF.

To be honest, you're right - it's nonsense, it's out of order to cap people if they've just got into a limit. I've seen a few villages that tier it (60, then 50, then 40), which from my point of view is the right way to go about it. I've had plenty of instances where the signs are obscured until it's far too late to cut 60 to 40 without essentially cracking out an e-stop.

But it's strict liability, so if I get caught I'm obviously a quadruple kitten murderer.
