Just replace it, 2 second job. It is needed but most places are relaxed enough to turn a blind eye.

fit some illuminated number plate screws.

Only time a number plate light isn't required is if the bike has no other lights.

I disagree.

A number plate light is something the Old Bill can do you for, but generally don't bother (never had a working one on any of my ZZR's in 2.5 years / 14,000 miles) and it is NOT a test item for the MOT. There's no code for them to fail or advise it on

With my last MOT the guy asked me if I think it passed or not.

I said nahh, I know the plate light isn't working, but he said it's not a requirement for the MOT and it had passed.

So Mr. Green

I went through this recently. The MOT place failed the bike but VOSA phoned him up and got it changed.

Quote:
There is no requirement for testing of a number plate light on a class I or II. If the light is missing or not working then the tester should record it as a pass with an advisory.

Far as I'm aware this is the answer, will find out later this month though as mines missing (ooh forgot to list that in my MOT thread no one responded to Smile)

There is no requirement to test the number plate light as part of the MOT but it is a legal requirement on the road, you can be fined for not having one.

After I phoned VOSA I phoned the Police and their answer was
Quote:

A restricted moped capable of 30mph or less does not require a number plate light fitting. If you derestrict it then it becomes a light motorcycle and you will need to fit a light.

You get away with all sorts of shit on 50cc's from an MOT stand point.

For example they don't need hi / low beam, just one beam will suffice for a moped.[/i]

So is the definitive answer that I need a number plate light? Getting mixed opinions.

Yes and no.

Yes you need one as the old bill can do you at night time if it isn't working.

No you don't need one, it isn't on the MOT and I've done over 14k without having one, including being followed for ages by an undercover copper who thought I hadn't noticed he was a copper, and being followed 5 miles across town by a marked copper at night and wasn't stopped for it.....
