I received 8 clutch plates, which is correct. My clutch plates are still in their basket, on the bike so I can check when I get in, but wanted to confirm these are correct. There appears to be 3 or 4 different types. One has silver lugs, which I think is the one that fits in the lugs on the outside of the basket. One plate has a shallower ring than the others, I'm sure this will be apparent when I split them all up where this fits. They arrived in two piles of 4. The first picture shows one of the piles of 4 and what appears to be identical ones in a pile of two. Then the second picture shows the totally different plates. I did have a look at the Haynes book of lies, which is also at home, I do remember it had plates labeled A and other letters. When I looked on the bike, they seemed to be mostly A.

I'm hopefully going to do this tonight, any advice? I did get a new nut so it can be pressed back into the shaft. I have new EBC clutch springs, they were £1 more than the regular ones, clutch plates are pattern. New clutch cover gasket too. It was all disassembled without too much issue, currently loosely fastened together.

What prep did you do? Just clean all the basket and steel plates with Brake/Clutch cleaner?

I'm going to cautiously clean out the inside.

Also the oil pump chain was slack, normal?

Paddy.

Prep? Never.

I looked at basket, decided it was shagged and didn't bother replacing the plates, just put old ones back in. Ended up buying a whole new basket. Soak the plates before putting them in. Leave in a tub of oil while you strip it down.

My bad Thumbs Up

Soak in oil is helpful, will do that, halfords had 5L motorcycle oil 10W/40 for £20 last week. Bought two so using for this job doesn't make the wallet twitch!

Plates all in, clutch lever solid. What did I do wrong?

Adjusted it until I could feel it doing something but it's rock hard.

EDIT: Looks like it was the springs, removed the EBC ones and put the old ones back in. It seems ok, but I didn't tighten up the bolts for the springs all the way, realising there should be some give. Right?

make sure the pressure plate bolts that hold the spring are done up squarely and evenly. Also check that the clutch pin pivot plunger is sitting correctly in the crank case

After redoing without fully tightening the pressure plate bolts it's working and I can now pull the clutch in, whilst in gear and move the bike.

Previously I fastened these up all the way, is this incorrect, I can see how it may be as there is no travel for the clutch release, hence it's solid.

I also reverted to the standard springs. Everything else appears correct, all plates are in the basket correctly.

They should be done up tight, have you got all the plates aligned in the correct grooves in the clutch basket?

Figured that, but thanks for the clarification. Going to replace the original plates and see how it fits back together.

It's fixed!

Removed it, replaced all the stock plates which weren't too bad, except the front and rear plates which are different, so I used the new front and rear plates instead.

Also I mixed the springs, used two of the new and two of the old. Et Voila, one Hybrid Clutch. How about that Paddy? Laughing

I could see movement in the basket before I put the springs back in, so figured I was on to a winner. Just rode it home from the garage, absolutely no slip. Pop it into 5th at 30 and wide open throttle, no slip at all. Take off is now brisk and smooth, rather than a sort of go then slip, then go.

It was re-assembled several times. You could see there was no movement in the basket with the new plates.

Also, previously the cable was adjusted as far as it would go, now there is a lot of adjustment available. I think the plates were just slightly different somehow.

The most annoying thing was the amount of oil I went through. Evil or Very Mad

I may need to remove to re-do the gasket if it doesn't seal properly, I have a new one but didn't want to use until I was happy, as it's exhaust off with the NTV to get to the clutch, I had to be sure it was all as it should be. Also had trouble with the front exhaust, so might do this at the weekend.
