I wonder if you can advise me.

the paint work is damaged.

If I coat it in wd40 or acf50, it looks acceptable - although not good.
see picture.

if it gets wet though, i.e., as if i was washing it, it dries and leaves milky white streak marks,
I don't really understand why it is doing this.

I can get by this keeping it coated it wd40, but I'd rather get it back to how it should be.

But I'm not sure what the issue is nor the best way to sort it.

I wonder if it simply needs a new coat of lacquer
or whether it needs paint as well?

I would do this with the engine in situ.

Please look at the picture included (this is with it coated in acf50, hence the wet look) and advise me on the best course of action.

as you can see, it's patchy, but I don't know what to make of this.
note the bigger looking patches of white on the first picture (crank cover) are reflections, not damage.
I obviously understand you can't give a full verdict, so I'm just after friendly advice, is all.

You can try and cut it back with some fine wet and dry (1200 grade) using it wet. However you will need to get the entire surface to be re-lacquered to the same base state otherwise you
will still get a patchy appearance. Given that it might actually be easier to repaint.

BTW what bike ?

The milky effect is most likely the water washing the oil of the WD40 off and giving you the streaks.

Can I just spray over it with paint followed by lacquer?

Or do I need to sand it first?

I'd really rather be able to do the former.

no you need to do the prep work first, sanding, roughen up the surfaces with wet and dry and clean it thoroughly or the new paint will just peel off
