Hi all,

Just had my first M.O.T on the bike, and it nearly failed because the ignition barrel is iffy, if the key is turned all the way the electrics dont work, so you have to twist the key back a bit.

I thought it might be quite easy changing the whole barrel to sort the problem.

Is this the best solution? And is it an easy job?

Many thanks in advance.

just change the ignition

on mine (ancient) CG, it was mega easy to change

take off the 4 wires in the headlight bowl to the switch

push up the tab (on the switch)

pop it out

buy one on ebay for about £6

reverse of the above

Boom!

Mine is a '99 model, I will have a look in the headlight bowl when the new switch comes!

If you haven't already ordered it; a full 'keyed alike' lock-set; ignition barrel; separate steering lock if the bike has one; seat lock & locking fuel cap, if you have one; costs something like £25 over £10 for ignition barrel on its own.
Fuel cap is straight swap; Seat Lock & steering lock are normally just two cross head screws; Ignition is two screws and plug in the head-lamp.
Lot can be swapped in about quarter of an hour.
Keyed alike set means that you dont have hassle of seperate keys for seperate locks; and if ignition lock worn other probably aren't much better; and key certainly will be.

Yeah, but an ignition malfunction matters not.

Nearly only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Was it even marked as an advisory, or did the bloke just have a bit of a moan about it? You don't even need a bleedin' key, you could run the whole lot off a switch. It's not like the ignition barrel on a CG is going to stop an equipped pikey for more than about 30 seconds anyway.

They tried to fail it, but then realised they couldnt because the electrics do actually work" intermittently", so i got it as an advisory with DANGEROUS in bold letters

I'm thinking I would like to get rid of this on the next MOT in case I want to sell it, I know it runs fine, but it doesnt look good on paper!

Erm... "dangerous" means it shouldn't be an advisory...

Either way, what si the actual wording and code they have put in there.

I will put the exact wording on when I get in from work later for you

In the meantime...

New ignition switch came in the post, its a five wire which should be right for my model, however, took the front lamp off, and there is some kind of connection box, which the wires wont fit into Evil or Very Mad

Has anyone seen one before?

i will try to get a pic up when I get in also

Hope the attachment works, thats my advisory list on the MOT no code next to it, just the **DANGEROUS**?

I just unclipped the wired base from the bottom of theold barrel, and clipped thenew barrel onto the base

Works great!! Razz

Many thanks to everyone for your advice Thumbs Up

Sounds overly picky and hasn't been able to put the actual MOT code on there because the don't exist, either get a new ignition or ignore it Laughing
