To and from an MOT station and to a place of repair

Hi all, I've pushed the limits of this ruling before but as I'm a bit more sensible nowadays I'd like some opinions.

I'm intending to go pick up a bike from Lincolnshire on Monday. It's not been on the road for 4 years, has no tax or test, no paperwork with it. My plan was to book a local mot, or an mot at a place near me (depending on what time it would be that I go up, as I might not be leaving there until 3, leaving me no plausible time to get back to Canterbury to get an MOT)

It's just I need to ride round a fair portion of the M25 and M11, which appears to be ANPR central. While I'm not really bothered about being buzzed doing whatever speed or having a letter sent to whichever random it happens to be registered to, as in situations like this I always apply for the paperwork from the day I bought it, For sure it's never a week later, that would be covering ones arse a little bit too much right? if I was to get stopped with insurance, a failed MOT or a prebooked MOT and no paperwork, surely this will look a bit shonky to the lovely white capped upholders of justice?

I'd say it would be very much on the dodgy side. Not to mention the inconvenience to the current owner who will have to explain to the police that it wasn't him.

However, I'd be more concerned about riding a bike that hadn't been ridden for four years on the road TBH. Personally I'd save the hassle and hire a van for a day.

If it was me I would hire a van and collect it that way, as it has stood for 4 years you don't know what else may be wrong with it.

That is quite a jaunt on a shed-find bike.

If you're preparing to legal-up, you may want to check your insurance for one of those hilarious "no MOT, no cover" clauses that they seem to like slipping in these days.

Sounds like you should be getting it for a "steal". Sure you couldn't have factored in a van?

could you not just get it using (a friendly garages) plates?

Get breakdown cover with "home start". Wait a few days or until cover is in effect. Do something to make your bike look genuinely broken down such as flattening a tyre or better yet, mess about with something you know cant be fixed at the roadside (but you know will either be cheap to repair or can be undone yourself). Get the breakdown company to take you to an appropriate garage.

Do you not need paperwork for an MOT nowadays? When I went for my last one they insisted I had an old MOT or the V5 with me.

I've been asked for them, but have been passed without them.

An MOT certificate is just a receipt now anyway, it should already be on The Computer.

you could just risk it!

a friend of mine has done this many times and has been lucky and got away with it.

the furthest she did was ride from north wales to london with no tax, mot, and a practically bald tyre with practically no groves in the thread of the centre on the tyre.

she was very carefully about what vehicle she had behind her trying to make sure that there was no marked police cars/vans

shes done this from time to time for over 10 years when buying a new bike and getting back home

There is nothing specifying a maximum distance that you are allowed to travel for an MOT. Additionally the vehicle is TAX exempt whilst driving to or from a place of test/repair for which a TAX disk cannot be obtained without. If you really wanted you could buy a bike in Scotland and MOT/Tax it in dover.

However I wouldn't fancy trying to explain that to a copper who will say that you're incorrect even if you show him the legislation, because that's what the man down the pub told him one time.

It's worth noting that the vehicle must be roadworthy in order to drive on the road in any circumstance, but the same applies for a fully tax and tested vehicle.

Over here we find dear flounced T.C spouting "the nearest MOT station by the most direct route" from some imaginary "regs" that he's dreamt up in his crash damaged noggin. Bless.

There's sod all in the statute about distance, but I do actually accept that he's got convictions out of it. Motoring cases come to court with an assumption of guilt, as far as I'm concerned, and booking a big distance away is clearly taking liberties.

I wouldn't do what the OP is proposing, is what I'm getting at, or at least I'd acknowledge that there's a realistic chance of being nabbed and convicted.

As to putting false plates on... that's perverting the course of justice, and if caught you can expect a custodial sentence, although probably suspended.

On risk/rewards, I'd van it.

Or you could get it delivered by courier, ive used uship twice and its cheaper than hiring a van. Just put your collection and delivery details in and let the couriers bid for the work.

Pyro...You know when you saw my bike at the BBQ...I'd been riding that since May with no MOT. I'd done a tour of Wales. Used motorways and rode it past our local cop shop almost daily.

Not saying what you should do, but saying it is possible....and not worth the hassle if I did get done.

I could've sworn the MOT ran out in September...It was the Insurance that needed renewing in September.
