Commuting home tonight and the traffic was pretty bad. Theres a stretch of about a mile and a half where traffic is either stationary or moving slowly between a couple of traffic lights and island.

Anyway....long line of stationary traffic on a single lane road, so I filter to the right for a while. I then notice a car ahead blatantly pull to the right to stop me filtering!!!! WHY??? other than making himself look a twat what is he gaining? Anyway I get past him as there was no traffic coming the opposite way so just went round him. ....

Then..after filtering a bit more I notice in my mirror a car pull out behind me (different car) and follows behind me filtering (still on a single lane road!!)...the road is narrow and he is almost fully on the opposite side of the road overtaking the long queue of traffic with cars coming the other way having to almost mount the kerb to avoid a head on!! He then overtakes me whilst im filtering causing traffic on the other side of the road to stop.

He obviously saw me filtering from a far, then past him and it somehow upset him. I had to laugh. I just dont understand why some drivers get so upset by bikers filtering. YES traffic is bad..YES its a pain in the arse being sat in a car when you just want to get home...but if it upsets them that much then they should get a bike!!

Perhaps it was a biker who forgot what he was being transported by Laughing

I always make sure to give a little thanks-hand to the people that pull left a bit nice to know there are drivers out there actually using their mirrors Rolling Eyes

My brother in law does this, even if he's not moving in the car, but has left a gap between him and the car in front and sees a bike coming, he closes right up to stop the bike going in front as they weave through traffic. For no reason at all. I almost had an argument about this with him, I think it's sour grapes "I'm stuck here, so should you be". I told him if he did that to me, his wing mirror would be off.

Ah yes, I've had this a few times.

What's even more fun in slow moving traffic, and if you have the time. They close up the gap on one side and you sit there with them growling in their mirror at you. Switch quickly to the other side (which by now has far more room) and sit there for a bit. They will immediately fly to the other side to block you from over/undertaking them that side.

Repeat this for a little to see how mad you can make them or to see how much commitment they have. Bonus points are given for them having to emergency stop because they haven't been looking at the car in front.

After they shit themselves they generally give up and let you past Thumbs Up

I can't understand it personally.

Until a few weeks ago, I'd never even sat on a bike. Did my CBT, then DAS and bought a bike - absolutely loving it.

I've been driving 20 odd years but have always taken care around bikes - so probably not your typical cager. Whenever I used to see a bike filtering, I'd think "you lucky bugger"... To deliberately get in the way isn't something that had ever crossed my mind.

Some people are just cocks... I think it's as simple as that and there's little point over analysing it!

I get it a lot when there's a queue of traffic at say, a set of lights, and it's in 2 lanes, generally one to straight on, and the other to turn left or right etc..

I'll usually filter through and position myself between the 2 cars at the front, and just slightly in front of them..

So often, one of the cars has to start edging forward alongside or past me, usually crossing the stop line, then tries to blast off the line the second it turns green in an attempt to beat me onto the single-lane road ahead..

What's the point? 9 times out of 10, the bike will be quicker, we're not doing anything wrong. Must just be idiots getting pissed that they have to sit on traffic while we scoot on through..

They're the ones who forget about days when it's pissing down and, while they're swanning along with their stereo on, heater up and comfy seat, you're crawling along with a wet arse, steamed up visor, frozen fingers and slippery tyres. It's swings and roundabouts but they seem to forget that.

There are also the other type who've let bikers through before and then had to sit and watch them fuck off sharpish after clipping, and breaking, the mirror on their car with their bar end.

I don't blame them for having a bit of a chip on their shoulder and trying to stop it happen again. I'd imagine they're a tiny percentage mind.

That sums it up.

I witnessed some [tiny] biker on an old CBR being really aggressive towards a cyclist coming down Northumberland Ave in London this evening (sounding his/her horn repeatedly and revving the balls off his/her bike) - we were approaching a red light at walking pace and the cyclist wanted to nip through a gap - the cyclist was in front of the biker and had the right of way but the biker just acted like a total cock for no real reason.

But granted, the cock ratio seems weighted toward cagers...

Before getting a bike I always used to give bikers as much motoring courtesy as I could. Think I just assumed it took relatively large knackers to ride those fuckers so yeah, have some space.

<devils advocate>

The first guy could have been pulling to the right to try and see further down the line of traffic, without bothering to notice that a bike was filtering up towards him?

</devils avocate>

...still means hes a twat though but might explain it.

My girlfriend always makes as much effort to move out of the way when a motorcyclist is filtering/overtaking, but she gets annoyed if they don't say thank you. There's no doubt that other people do this and when they don't get any courtesy back they get annoyed and are more likely to block motorcyclists in the future, perhaps if you can see that someone is purposely making way for you, say thank you (if you can do so safely).

Many reasons:
1. Jealousy
2. Jealousy
3. Jealousy

Actually I've been asked by many car drivers why bikers do something so dangerous as to overtake in such a way, stating it must be illegal. When I tell them I was taught how to filter safely by my instructor and its perfectly legal, it takes a while to convince them.

Its the same with the 'bikes charging up behind you from nowhere', and I say if you are still applying the 6 second glance in the mirror, you will notice the biker arriving.

I did think that could be the case....but when I saw him look up in his rear view mirror, notice me, then continue a little further to the right to block me further when he saw me start to pull around him...I came to the conclusion he wanted to block me. I just pulled the clutch and revved as I passed his open window.......although a bit fruitless on a 250.. Neutral haha

Thickies genuinely believe we're jumping the same queue that they're in - much like Foreigners might do in Abroad - rather than getting out of their way. There must be a law against that!

Spoiler: most people are thickies.

I honestly believe that the "THINK BIKE" campaign budget would be better spent putting up a few signs saying "Filtering is legal, safe, and helps you as well as the biker. Would you rather they were stuck in front of you? Stop being a cock about it, thickie."

Equally why are (some) bikers arseholes?

I see as many cock-ends on motorbikes annoying motorists.
Just watch a bunch of pikers passing a line of cars. Some of them are very inconsiderate to the poor cnuts stuck in cars.
They try to overtake without making a plan except Follow-the-Leader and end up having to barge into the gap between the traffic too late.
Amateurism.

One or two car drivers behave like cunts when being 'filtered' but those folk are cnuts whether being filtered or not. Usually found in lane three and no-fucker can pass them even when traffic is flowing. Mad Bastirts. Smile

I can honestly say hand on heart i've never encountered a pain the ass cager whilst filtering. Very Happy

That said, the tuono is a big sit upright imposing bike and with the can I had on was bloody damn loud! So cagers generally knew I was coming and would move out of my way.
If it wasn;t for the mpg and clutch I would vote it as an ultimate filtering bike Mr. Green

There's never really much opportunity for filtering near me, apart from coming off the A666 at rush hour, but even when I am most cagers tend to be helpful

Guys who drive Addison Lee mini vans tend to try close gaps for motorcyclist within central london, it is pretty frustrating at times but i try not to let my frustration affect my riding.
