Ok, we'll looks like the issue is with the tail light loom. Not a clue what it is. When both bulbs are in the holders they will not light, or they will be so dim thy hardly glow. Yet if I remove one bulb then the tail light works fine,

It doesn't matter which bulb or which side, but both is no go. I've popped a video up. Please help.

The wiring is wrong, when both lamps are dim means they are wired in series which is wrong. I strongly suspect a bad earth on one of the earth leads between the lampholder and the 3 pin connector, meter each earth wire out and also move the cable about as you meter as the plastic outer of the cable may be intact but the inner is broken.

Yes, you could prove this by connecting the black negative(earthwire) directly to the metal outside body of the lamps and then connecting the positive lead to each of the tail light and brake light feed cables from the connector, this will show up if one or both earth connections are bad.

The bulbs can't be wired in series. If they were and you removed one the other one wouldn't light. It's either an earth fault or a poor connection in the supply to the bulbs.

Yep, this. ^^^

Check your connections and earths. Check the holder contacts for corrosion too.

Think it's fixed. The earth wire on the holder was blue with corrosion an some broken. I cut the plastic away and replaced with new wire, and all seems ok with the battery test!

Yes they can and the video clearly shows them been wired in series, just connect the 12 volt positive supply to one positive connection and the neutral supply to the second positive connection.

Well Fuck Me.
You obviously know more than me and thousands of other electrical engineers worldwide. I guess that by your reference to "positive" and "neutral" your an electrical engineer as well.

Series connected bulbs will not light if you remove one of the bulbs. If you remove one of the bulbs there is a break in the circuit, hence it will not light. Not only that, if you connect two 12 volt bulbs in series they will only glow as they are receiving 6 volts each.

If your going to give advice here try to understand what your talking about first.

If you had have looked at the video before commenting you would have clearly seen the Op had wired the lamps in series so there is no question that they cannot be wired in series and to answer your question I am an electrical engineer, no need to be so defensive when you are proven wrong.
