Kickstart = pre 2004.

Anything below that will fit engine wise. So long as its the non air cooled lump.

10th digit on the frame number will tell you how old the frame is at least,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number

You would need to check the engine number against a manual or search on line, usually you will find stuff like 1992-1997 001000-002345 and so forth (example).

If you have no numbers to go by then some engines have a model designation cast somewhere on the barrel/head etc Yamaha often use three digit codes like 3bn (2000's I think) to distinguish revised motors.

Early motor will use the old style stator coils (one for spark/light one for charging) the later use the tzr star shaped (three wire) stator.

The white bodywork suggests early to mid 90's but without numbers we are stabbing in the dark,

If you don't have numbers the bikes is basically worthless as you will never be able to prove it isn't stolen. Unless the guy gave you legitimate receipts from a shop for the bike/ frame that states no numbers you should take it for granted that the bike IS stolen and proceed with caution.

Any dtr/tzr (possibly tdr125 too) engine will fit any of the year dtr/tzr frames as the mounts line up fine, I have seen people fit the electric start to the earlier bike

Though if you are fitting a dtr engine into a tzr or visa-versa you need to keep the correct cylinder head for your bike as the mounts are on opposite sides.

If you have the early bike with the ypvs locked shut the servo system from a full power tzr or dtr will fit either with the correct cables,

The later bikes have the servo system as standard but are set up to close the servo at high revs, I recall something mentioned about a sensor in the clocks being used to control it that needs ticking out of the way rather than removing to get the servo working correctly.

+1 although it's probably been destroyed at this point.

DTR's are one of the most stolen bikes going. I bet the police could tell you a lot with the VIN if it exists Police

Thank you for all the replys and help! The main problem i have with not knowing the year is parts, i have got the bike running and riding now! The basket case was the cause its completely indented by clutch plates.. tried to file back and it does select gear and pull away just not nicely! Will a 2005 basket case fit do you reckon?

Laughing

It's pretty much impossible to find a DTR that hasn't been either stolen and ragged, or just ragged.

Yours is a pre-04 that's all I know, or at least it has the seat. I had a nice and shiny 07 once:

Pics or it didn't happen!

Have you checked for a frame number yet?

Only way to be 100% a part will fit is to give the dealer the frame number or at least an accurate age.

The engine was largely unchanged through the water cooled one. Clutch from a 2 stroke GPR125 will also work

Many companies use the Yamaha engine, as paddy said derbi do with the gpr, Husqvarna, sachs, ktm and many others use it too but whether the parts are interchangeable is something you can't always take for granted.
