even though you know its almost impossible to do
but you keep going over and over it

recently I listened to a radio play set to music (dark side of the moon)
that had a visual aspect on the web page using CGI animation
when I thought why can't you use lasers to create
a 3d environment to control light and create geometric or even more complex shapes and images
pretty much like a quadrophonic sound allows you move certain sounds around a room but leave
others in a 2D state (yes I'm a big floyd fan)

I already use several lasers and control them by laptop to create 2D effects and shapes
but these rely on the lasers passing through smoke to make them visible
but I can create complex 2D waves and shapes like tunnels or revolving prism's
or even text and graphics that project onto the walls

my initial thought was to use 8 lasers (one in each corner of the room)
focused to a single central point then use a modified version of the software I have to create a 3 dimensional
map of the room and then use the lasers to project beams to intersect to create a 3D image
but I realised quickly that for quad sound you are moving molecules of air
to do the same with light you need to manipulate photon's and stop a light beam dead in its tracks
which is where my idea hits the rocks of known science

but I keep thinking about ways to do this using other medium (like the smoke to create the 2D effects)
again there is an issue, to get enough density in the smoke to get it to work the audience would suffocate
or drown as the smoke is water based and would vaporise the whole room to about 100% humidity
as then I wouldn't need to manipulate photons there is enough partials for the light to interact with

suppose I could always make the audience wear respirators LOL

anyone else have out of the box idea's that they can't stop pondering
or should I cut back on the weed Laughing

Laughing

Talk to the jedi they figured out how to do it a long time ago.

here you are only considering light as a particle, it has wave properties to; therefore it can interfere constructively or destructively.

If you are familiar with holography (volume/Denisuk/Bragg reflection) then you know that the 2D piece of paper that looks 3D is not actually 2D. The thickness of the holographic film has to be much larger than the wavelength of the laser light. Since laser light of a common laser; the Nd YAG solid state laser is of wavelength ~1000nm, the film thickness looks 2D. Trouble is this holographic film takes a large amount of time to 'engrave'. If you were to take something similar to an LCD screen, that you send an electrical current through to change it's properties and then stack another layer on top, and then another, you may be able to create an almost 2D object display 3D holographic properties. That is my idea anyway. You heard it here first

Different concept than the one tbourner linked to, but it is in fact possible to adjust the "speed" of light. Light only travels at 186,686 mps in a vacuum. That's the constant. It can be brought down to walking pace or even slower by passing it through different substances.

If you mean like a hologram as such, but made from lasers. I think the only way to get it to work would be if you had say a big black box/pillar in the middle of the room. That way it would stop the light the way you want it Laughing

I think the only way to actually stop the light in theory would be to find a sort of optimum watts to wavelength ratio? So the lights still visible but not strong enough to actually make it across the room...

There are a few things out there doing similar.

If you could create a really good solution you'd make millions and be doing better than some that no doubt have many millions invested in it.

I think the water-fountain solution is quite an eloquent one.

the water dragon is similar to the effect of laser through smoke
though I believe they were just projecting white light not laser beams

laser beams are very tricky to manipulate as they are pure beams of light, unless the hit an solid opaque surface
they keep travelling basically forever so stopping a bean dead can't be done by reducing the power
it has to hit a physical barrier, you can change there direction by using mirrors easily but creating a hologram without a medium like smoke or water vapour
both of which are not very good for an indoor event when you have an audience
