Hello, I am in my last year of college and I am designing a digital, universal rev counter as my final product for my electronics subject. I was curious to hear what a big motorbike community thinks about this and if you have any pointers for doing this. Also if you have any suggestions about any extras that could be added on to it such as battery voltage indicators, that would be much appreciated.

You are probably going to get slated for this question, but as a serious suggestion I would look at an engine hours counter as used on aircraft and boats.

You need to count pulses down the HT leads in order to indicate a correct RPM. Google/look on demon tweeks for universal tachos/rev counters to see how they work.

Digital Sad

Sounds like a cool project though, wish we had done stuff like that in college.

I guess one pretty cool extra would be something showing what gear you're in and what gear the system suggests or is that going too far?

A bit of searching and you would have found that a digital tacho isn't as popular as analogue :-

One thing I notice is that all aftermarket rev counters I've seen are pre set on the scale they use, usually 10, 15, or 20k. If you can find a way to make the scale adjustable to any number, that would be unique. If your going for an LCD output, that would be fairly simple to do as well.

Not very into the thrash it hard spirit of biking but I'd like to see a bike tacho with the little green up and down arrows like they have on car's trying to tell you when they think you should be changing up or down. Laughing

More useful things on modern sky high revving sports bikes would be a red zone that gradually increases as the oil temp comes up, and or an oil temp readout.

For a laugh you could also have a green zone on the tacho like on HGV's for maximising fuel efficiency, or a girly pink zone at low revs, and a text lit up that says 'You is da man!' near the rev limit/shift light zone. Wink

My KOSO clocks are adjustable on the rev limit. So it goes to 12k 15k and possibly 18k? (I know there's 3 options)

My 2006 Guzzi has a settable threshold for a red LED to advise of up-changes. Standard feature.

I think that if I was the sort of biker who was interested in revs, I'd buy a bike with a rev counter already fitted. Only the most pov spec machines don't have them these days anyway, and you're unlikely to make a living selling to people who buy such bikes.

OK, I'll try to find one constructive thing to say. Don't show numbers, they'll change too fast, show a (configurable) scale, running green -> yellow -> red.

If you must do numbers, at least make them colourful, or have a big, obvious "CHANGE UP, MUPPET!" light, since that's all that really matters.

How about, for those bikes with a screen, you use some kind of optical woo-woo to make the trailing edge of the screen (ie the cut or rolled end of the screen at the top, nearest your face) a supplementary rev indicator, using the principle Rogerborg outlined. As the revs rise the edge of the screen lights up, sweeping from left to right with colour change along the way to impress upon the rider the urgency of a gear change.

You retain your numerical rev counter on the dashboard, for pub tales, but the rev indicator is more visible in your peripheral vision as a general impression of where in the rev range you are.

The crude implementation would be to stick a line of LEDs along the top, but a cooler version would use optical transmission up the screen onto a ground or otherwise optically opaqued or translucent edging that made the light visible.

Give ReRace some competition and design a wank app that calculates your lean angle. Maybe design an added bonus feature that when you go too far over a big fuck off LED flashes CUNT at you.

Just you.

the only bikes I can think of that don't have rev counters are 125cc's

125cc's have an on/off switch instead of a throttle.

I like my large dials on my ZZR.

I'm doing this but stacking the 3916's to give me a smaller resolution to each LED, expect to see a thread some time in 2018 when I pull my finger out...

Mine has been built, and sat in a draw waiting to be fitted, for about a year. Other bikes going bang have halted progress. Crying or Very sad

I'll probably be sending you a million questions via PM when I start letting the smoke out of the IC's then! Hoping to team this with an arduino for speed, rpm readout, gear indicator and idiot lights on a 128x64 screen with an arc of smd's around it showing rpm.
