I'm thinking of going on a day trip (or 1 night) to France before the weather gets too cold...just so I can say I have been abroad on the bike Mr. Green

Can I go there on a 33hp licence? And if my insurance provides European cover, can I literally just ride to Dover and get on a boat (or Folkstone, and get on a train) or do I have to sign any forms or make any phone calls?

Cheers Smile

Just go, you will have insurance cover but best check policy just in case.

no forms other than filling in stuff to book.

need gb badge, all your bike docs, reflective stickers on helmet, Passport. GO

I prefer tunnel. book online. it'll cost about £27 for a 2 day return. Usually pull off the M20 and an hour later i'm on the motorway in france.

C'est bon!!

I have ridden a bicycle on the wrong side of the road in Holland, and that seemed ok, but how is it riding a motorbike on the wrong side for the first time?

Me to, Dont know why but also prefer it when i take the car. Odd.

OP. Your policy should give you minimum 30 days riding abroad. Some want you to tell them when you are going, most dont. Just read the small print and remember. Flashing the headlamp does not mean the same thing over there.

Enjoy

Not that bad, but take care if you have been stopped and distracted, the classic is leaving a petrol station.
Not a bad idea to put a bit of tape by the speedo with an arrow pointing right for the first day or two.
Roundabouts feel rather strange but much less common than here.

Preferred it also, remember to look both ways when pulling out onto a 2 way road, unlike me... subsequently, I changed my pants soon after.

Depends what you want out of interesting.

Old stuff, Gravelines is just down the road, boulogne on sea is a little further in the other direction and a decent size seaside place.
Lille has plenty of shopping, a karting track, hotels.
Brussels, bit of everything, good, relaxed and cheap drinking and plenty to see and do.

Brussels 4 hrs from London, including tunnel.

Motorways are ok over there. going to brussels non motorway will add lots of time.

It's amazing how close it is Shocked Are there many complicated lane systems and roundabouts between the Eurotunnel and Brussels?

Aye, all complicated inasmuch as roundabouts got the wrong way (for the uninitiated) once you done a few its no different to UK

Time of day can be a big factor belgian city jams and tailbacks I find badarse as anything London sees.

The whole driving on the wrong side thing, don't let it worry you, within 15 minutes you will used it wondering what the fuss was about.

The continent just seems like it was made for motorcycling.

Be carefull of the "priority to the right" in the towns and especially out in the country. I've been here 10 years and it still catches me out now and then.

When you enter a village or town, there will always be a sign with the name of it on it, that's when the 50kph starts, and finishes on the sign on the exit of said village / town.

Take it easy, and enjoy the experience Thumbs Up

Off the tunnel and pretty much straight onto the motorway. there is little to confuse you until you get almost into Brussels and then it's just pay attention to the roads for a few miles into the centre.

There can be junctions that make you think but pretty sure you won't come across any Belgian versions of the magic roundabout to fry your brain.

It is acceptable and legal to ride in France on the 33BHP restricted licence.

You will need a passport, both parts of your licence, your V5C and an insurance certificate, it is also worth mentioning the EHIC which is the reciprical European health insurance card.

Brussels is an absolute nightmare. It's packed with traffic pretty much all the time. The amount of traffic makes London look like a ghost town.

What's worse is that all the main roads go under ground so you can loose your bearings.

Random streets are closed off for seemingly no good reason. Immigrant prostitutes walk the street in broad daylight next to coffee bars all within 200m of the Grand Place.

Still there is some interesting architecture outside of the areas that don't look like refugee camps.

I prefer Antwerp.

If it's your first trip abroad on the bike though you'll probably love it.

That's what I thought, every traffic light junction seems blocked with cars stopped at all angles to weave around.
Kind of fun but can't think of a good reason to go there when there are better places even in Belgium, Bruges for example.

Amsterdam or even Rotterdam would probably be better choices for a nearby European city to visit.

Just give it some thought. As you can get caught in a snow shower. And riding in that there, or coming back can be a right pain in the Azz.

Seems that it still catches most French drivers out as well. Either that or they just don't pay any attention to it.
