 |

Hi guys,
Today I've enquiried about a job in Manchester for the same company I work for at the moment. I'm from Glasgow myself and the job is a good step forward as It'll be a massive pay rise (should I be good at it)
The manager down there told me he'd start me no problem, and my current manager is going to keep my Job open for a few months incase I don't like it, but I think it would be silly not to go for it.
The question I have is, what are the living costs like in Manchester? Could I cope in a decent house myself? as I'd have to leave my missus up here for her last year at uni. I'd probably be renting and I think I'd rather a decent house than a flat for the sakes of car security (and for when I get a bike)
What would I expect for rent/bills in a decent area? If anyone could give me some influence in my decision it'd be appreciated

A friend of mine lived in Ramsbottom, up north of Bury and paid about £500 a month for a 2 bed house, no garage, communal parking outside the house. Rammy is an area that's quite nice, not much happens.
It's about 20-30 mins to manchester on motorways by bike. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Can't answer much without an idea of what you want/can afford to spend or what your idea of 'decent' is?
Is a 2 bed terrace decent?, cos theres thousands of them to pick from an virtually any area of Manchester. Not long ago you would have struggled to find anything clean for less that £490-£500pcm, but prices have dropped quite abit (at least in Tameside anyway) and the same sort of terrace will now be sub £450 and 3x more of em to choose from.
Terraces will virtually all be Band A council tax. These are pretty typical. 25% discount if your on your own
Also depends where the job is?, do you want to live close by or commute from somewhere else?
If for example you looked at Rawtenstall, all the same kinds of size places as Tameside will be £100 cheaper.....because the WitchWay bus service to Manchester is £100 a month
In the Semi Detached (Band C) I was in until a few months ago, it costs nearly £9k per year just to have the house - before buying food, running bikes/car, phone, etc. That was £500 a month rent and well below market value (landlord=family friend). A Terrace would be a little cheaper, but not much.
Salary is everything, £9k to you might sound fine, the same to someone else is basically their entire wage after buying beans a bus tickets.
p.s. estate agents are all cunts....lettings agents are cuntish failed estate agents. HTH ____________________ MT-03 | CX500B | Yamaha RS125 | Voskhod 2 |

LP, thanks for that
i'll be working in Salford, wouldnt mind a commute if i'm honest, but i've only ever been to manchester twice so i aint all clued on anywhere around it. my manager himself moved from Glenrothes to work in Salford, and he's living in Cheshire.
the new job will see me earn around £1300 more than i do now, should i be good at the job. £450 per month doesn't seem too bad. i'd be aiming for something sub £700 including bills (£600 ideally) - so i can see the benefit of the new job
cheers for all the advice so far - and Tameside seems to be close to work too! ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZL600 Eliminator

rawtenstall (pronounced rottenstall) and ramsbottom are both sat on the A56 which becomes the M66, joining the M60 manchester ring-road
I use the M60 daily to get to and from Trafford park which is a similar kind of run, it's not too bad but can clog easily as you've got the M62 joining at the same point as the M66, the M62 then departs / joins further round heading for Liverpool and the M6.
not too bad by bike and tolerable by car
The inner ring-road isn't worth hacking your way through traffic for just to avoid the motorway.
worth just having a look on google for the small towns and villages surrounding Bury etc as you may find somewhere with crap transport links and low rent that suits you well - irwell vale springs to mind, the only public transport is the steam railway! ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

I would suggest that at least to start with you look at a house-share rather than a place of your own.
The advantages for you would be:
1) It'll be cheaper, giving you chance to build up some savings perhaps
2) It'll be easier to get out of the lease if the job doesn't go well or you don't get on with the co-sharers
3) It'll give you chance to get to know the area and decide where you would like to live if you do get on OK in the job
4) Ultimately if the job goes well look at buying rather than renting. A 2-bed in some areas can be had for £60-70k. If you put aside £1000 of your pay increase for a year that's a £12k (20%) deposit, and by then your missus should be joining you and you will have 2 incomes to apply for a mortgage with. A £50k mortgage will probably cost you less than £500/month depending where interest rates are when you apply. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

you could root around the edge of salford for a small terrace , cash upfront for 80 to 120 a week .
Salford is but a 10 minute gentle stroll but stay away from the student areas as they are being milked rotten .
look for private small landlords . cash upfront helps alot cementing tenancies . Some lanlords dont use ' agencies' who just monopolise rent , fix high rents and dictate selective local housing projects .
In Salford student housing takes all precedence . Peel holdings? ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. so far tonight, i've been tempted by eccles and bolton. eccles being close with a few options available to me, and Bolton having some more affordable houses, and only really 20 minutes away (not taking into consideration rush hour)
more places in Eccles so far, although im too tired to carry the search.
tomorrow, i plan on calling, accepting the job, collecting my kilt for my sisters wedding, and i can begin to look forward to a new life! ____________________ Current: Kawasaki ZL600 Eliminator

I live in Bolton, mostly nice areas and you can get a pretty decent place for your money. And on a bike it's an absolute doddle to get to Manchester ____________________ Current: '99 Fazer 600 | '99 Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE
