yeah, all the irdium, mirror, black visors are illegal for road use. when it's sunny i use my black visor but usually carry my clear one incase i'm stopped by the police. i've been told that they're more lenient if you're prepared.
I'd NEVER go out with the illegal visors(at least the black ones) at night, it's plain stupid.

Why is it illegal to wear tinted visors in England? Sounds like the kinda bullshit law you would have in Ireland, but thankfully not.

Does that mean car drivers arent allowed to wear sunglasses aswell?!! 8)

the "no tinted visor law" is only used at night but they let you wear them during the day because you can simply swap your visor at night for a clear 1, thats why car drivers ar'nt allowed tinted windscreens because obviosly they cant change them at night.

Errrmm, no it doesnt. The limit on the tint only applies to protective vision equipment. So a car driver can happily wear sunglasses. So can someone on a bike, but it is technically illegal to wear sunglasses on a bike with the visor up because then the sunglasses become eye protection and so must have the relevant BS stamp

All the best

It's because the tint you refer to obstructs too much light. Including daylight.
Most cars have tinted glass all around to reduce some of the uv but the 'dark' tint wot wanna-be gangstahs think looks cool on their motor is illegal.

Iridium blocks too much daylight too.

I have the 'legal' tint and clear and one hat has a sunvisor that drops behind the clear visor. I don't have any problem using a legal tint though. They are 'useable' for night but if you consider the complaints of bikers and the 'sorry mate I didn't see you' excuse for 'poor obs', then one should really use the clearest visor for dark roads. Unless you live life on the wild side. (Or think you do).

It is a shame we can't wear what we want but some of the science suggests good vision is inportant in motorbike safety. Smile

I use a gold mirror one during the day pretty much all year around. Never been bothered by police as most of them have an illegal black tint (can tell as you can't see their face at all).

I even asked my examiner his views on them when I passed last November as he is an ex-bike copper. He said they are usually lenient compared to cars as they'd rather you be wearing an illegal visor and able to see rather than being legal but being blinded.

All down to discretion and common sense of the copper in other words.

Use a dark [illegal] tint all the time virtually unless night/fog riding etc.

Never had a mention. I think most forces treat them as acceptable unless its dodgy conditions, the only arguement against them really would be 'wear sunglasses instead' but realistically i find thats not always possible in most of my helmets the glasses dig in unbearably after about 30 minutes riding.

I take it iridium visors where just invented when this thread was created Thinking

I use a dark visor 24/7. At night I have it up with glasses underneath, though if the speed gets above a certain level I close it. I can see well enough.

I ride with my eyes shut.

In fact I'm blind.

But I have that eye sight like Riddick has, it's great.

use tinted visors 100% of the time, if it's dark/cold/raining I just flip my visor up and grin & bear. Plus it's a ballache swapping visors over.

Does a helmet tell you what size visor it needs, I'd like to invest in a nice blue or gold one
