I am currently doing a engine rebuild on my kawasaki kmx 125 and have a couple of questions i bought a mitaka 0.5 oversize piston kit to fit after i have got my barrel rebored in the RIK rings there is piston rings and a kind of curved softer ring in with the box and cant figure out what it is? Also where can i find info on painting my barrel i have ordered a can of Simoniz engine enamel matt black is this the stuff i should use? any feedback appreciated

If its a small circular ring it sounds like its a gudgeon pin circlip, should be two of them.

hi,
is the other ring not a keystone ring?
would it not have been better to ask about the engine paint BEFORE you ordered it?
just make sure you thoroughly clean/degrease the block before painting. might want etch primer but suspect its not neccesary.

Yes it would of been wiser to get a second opinion first the seller claims it to be able withstand 900 degree c in matt black and internet claims 300c guessing this will still be fine? iv started to try and remove the old silver ally paint as it softened with hot water what am i best using ? i started with a bit of wire wool just want it to look half decent once done in the last picture not sure if it can be seen theres a small hole where liner meets barrel does this need welding?. i uploaded a few pics the seller of piston claims its new but as seen in picture top of piston doesnt look it and he says the 3rd ring goes in bottom groove followed by piston ring as may have larger diameter that top ring? thanks for replies guys

It's a liquid cooled bike so it'll not be seeing over 150 degrees.

I am a particular fan of plastikote BBQ paint in that kind of application.

right okay il order one looks to have done a good job of your casings will a 400ml can be enough to give how ever many coats my cylinder needs? any ideas of a rough figure id be looking at to get my frame powdercoated?

Thanks..would it be a wise or silly idea to give the barrel a coat of matt black engine enamel then apply bbq paint? with there not being much warm weather can see if being a bit of a task

I have always applied lots of thin coats directly onto the bare metal. I thoroughly degrease the surface to be painted with a solvent and warm it up on top of a radiator before painting.

I did the rocker cover of that CB500 the other day with chrome-effect plastikote radiator paint. Looks like brand new now.
