Winter is coming and I for one wont be riding as much and the chances are I`m not going to go touring.
So that got me thinking about the times I have been out this year and all the places I`ve been.

So there I was on my way to Welsh Wales, going along the A14 at a right old lick (70mph) Cool .
Now this was totally my fault for not paying attention .
The traffic started to come to a stop at an alarming rate , however, I just carried on at light speed Shocked .
Within feet of the cars in front I realised what was happening.
Absolutely no time to brake, so I went in-between them, still doing silly mph.
It has to be the fastest filtering I have ever known Shocked !
Fortunately I got away with it and was able to scrub off speed without hitting anything, because as sure as egg are eggs, if I had made contact with any of the cars, I would not be writing this now.
I spent the next 150 miles calling myself a stupid c*nt!

The bike , being slim , enabled me to get between the cars.
If I had of been in a car, I would have certainly made contact and crashed.

So have you ever been on a bike and it has been your salvation rather than making things worse?

You "got away with it" due to the width. It's certainly an advantage sometimes, but in most cases where width has "saved" me, I wonder whether the incident would've occurred at all if I'd been driving the much more visible car.

Overall, the narrowness is a safety negative, not a plus, but that's rather obvious really.

My post from 2009.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=2339796#2339796

on my usual route into town through godzillas and dinosaurs and tanks and stuff I was overtaking a lorry and bus appeared in front of me, blatted through the gap in front of the lorry and skimmed the bus with my elbow only to find an Alien waiting for me.

https://i34.tinypic.com/2hyvuis.jpg

everything is 100% true, apart form the godzillas, aliens, tanks and dinosaurs.

It was quite epic, but i didnt get that uber adrenaline rush thing, i just felt "that was a bit close"

I managed to squeeze inbetween two barriers and bomb it down the road trying to avoid the marshalls catching my number plate.

Well... The Marshall's and police don't need your number plate now. You just admitted it on a public forum which is probably used by feds anyway... Doh!

Dude - you promised us time and time again you wouldn't go full retard. And now look. Why?? Why go FULL retard when even your medium retard is pretty damn retarded??

I just don't get it. The promises. The really strong medium retardedness. *shakes head regretfully*

Wasn't that something that Luke / X said he did once too.. 120mph filtering after a bend in motorway?

And we all know how he is now (RIP).

He said a lot of things, most of them were bollocks, the rest were usually just unpleasant.

Thumbs Up

I once overtook a white van on (what turned out to be) a blind bend (thought I could see what was coming... couldn't). I was in a car. It was a 2-way, NSL country A road. The thing that came the other way that I hadn't seen was a bike. The rider of that bike is alive now (well, they certainly avoided death at the time) thanks to their skill and the size of their bike, because all I could do at the time was hammer on the brakes and move as close to the van as I could (I was fully alongside it). The biker moved left in their lane and got through the bike-and-a-bit sized gap I had left for them, at a closing speed of something like 100 mph.

This was a long time ago and I was not then nor am I now proud of that moment. I thank whoever that biker was for good obs and/or quick thinking.

I did this when I just had new pads fitted, yes I need to take care, yes I will. Adjustable levers, bite not where expected and first proper brake after leaving the garage, fortunately not going fast (about 20 in a 30). Just went round the outside of a car I was heading towards, then managed to duck back in before the lorry appeared turning left into my path.

yes, two cars hit the breaks hard as some stupid bitch stopped her 4by4 in the road as it had a flat tyre. I managed to get up the outside of the outer car and the armco barrier with inches to spare! Bike saved my life that day!

When I look back at road riding I got away with a lot, finding a line of traffic around a corner at triple digit speeds and having to do some high speed filtering like you and clipping a curb while putting down a stand up wheelie and having one hell of a tank slapper spring to mind straight away!

I wouldn't say a bike saved my life, I caused the close calls by riding it like a dick. Laughing
