Been lusting after a black Kawasaki 636 2005/6 model. Found one for £3400 with alleged 8000miles on the clock with a few mods. I was all set to buy until I found out the dealer has only 1 key - and it's not the master key!

Would I be correct to avoid buying this, as isn't the master key important for key cutting, data mapping etc? To replace would cost around £1000 as would need new ecu too?

Please advise! Sad

You should be able to get a key made up for considerably less than that I'd have thought.
Maybe not a 'master key', but should be able to get another transponder key made up if you have the existing key.

Haven't looked in to bike keys specifically, but there's places that do the same for car keys and as far as I'm aware the transponders work the same.

SQL - Why do you say avoid? Thanks for the link, it looks like a clean and lovely bike, but I'm not a fan of their design, I much prefer the 2005/2006 model.

G - Doesn't the red key access the ecu's date (mileage, mapping, clock etc...)? Wouldn't the value of the bike without this key be much negated? Or would you still proceed with the purchase?

Having 1 black key would not bother me in the slightest.

I don't know for that specific model - in cases I've seen the master key doesn't do anything special bar let you code new keys. But other cases may well be different.
I would certainly use it as a bargaining tool - or request they get one sorted.
It's far from uncommon to find key's lost as you're getting towards 10 years old.

get the black one cloned

I'm not sure what the red one does exactly, but it is needed to put new key codes in the system, if you have the one you've got cloned it has the same code and doesn't need the red one to install a new code

#1 Be aware that if the bike is stolen, your insurer might ask for two keys as a condition of paying out.

#2 Check that it's not stolen / recovered. Wouldn't bother me, but it might bother anyone you want to sell it on to.

#3 Tell the seller that it's a big deal to get a spare. If they claim that it's not, then invite them to produce one if they want your money.

Phone or email Kawasaki UK and ask them about the red key

Thank you for the helpful feedback.

I got the dealer to buy a spare from Kawasaki and thrown it in the deal, with a £300 reduced asking price. Paid deposit.

Happy riding soon!

(Damn I've missed riding) Very Happy

Spare key or a replacement key?

A cloned replacement is easy enough, but not sure what else the red key is used for other than programming new keys.

All the best

For Honda's HISS system, you dont need a 'master' key, just a coded key to get into the reprogramming system.

Somthing like, remove the plug for the crank position sensor and bridge the wires to the loom. It puts it into key coding mode. ( cant remember 100% )

Why worry about it? Just get another cut even if it needs programming. Got one cut and programmed for my Busa for £45. Thumbs Up

The worry is that on some of these systems the red key may be required for other things. And a £1k bill for a new ECU and red key to be able to do these things can be a touch nasty.

But not a clue with the Kawasaki system what it is required for, or if just for programming a new key (in which case a clone is the cheap and easy solution).

By the way, some markets didn't have this key system on their models, so if an import check if it should have a red key.

All the best

Surely a dealer has the facilities to clone a master key?

I was going to say with my Honda from new I only got two black keys for the HISS system. I just swap them every now and then to make sure that they both work.

If you have the master key then no problem.

The master key normally allows other keys to be programmed to work. With no master key you cannot program the bike to accept other keys, hence all you can really do is clone an existing key that works (and if the bike decides to no longer recognise that keys code you are stuffed).

My understanding is that on some of these systems there is nothing special about the master key, merely that it is the first key to be used with the ecu.

There are people around who say they can make up a new master key. In which case they would need to reprogram the ecu to accept a new master key. Possibly all they need to do is wipe the record of the master key from the ECU.

All the best
