TL/DR: Turning up to a carvery and being told you can't park in a car space. Acceptable?

The other day I turned up to a Toby carvery with a pillion to meet up with others. I eat there regularly and know the layout. They only have two tables suitable for groups, and I parked where my bike could be seen out of the window of these tables - might as well park it where you can see it where possible!

The car park was only about 50% full so there were plenty of other spaces, but admittedly it was 4pm, and by 5pm the car park would probably fill up.

We met up with others inside and got the table. Chatting away, as you do.

Interrupted, "Is that your bike?". I said "Yes". "Can you park it at the side please, it is using a live space "...

Instant dilemma of whether to comply or argue about being able to park it where I like.

After a pause as I decided what to do, I decided to comply, as didn't want to come across as an argumentative arsehole in front of everyone and ruin the atmosphere! If it had just been me and my mate, I think I'd have declined to move it.

I had to move it out of sight. And I felt slightly annoyed about it really. To me, it has an engine, road tax, insurance, it's a vehicle and it should be entitled to a full space if I think it appropriate, and then there's the customer service aspect, I didn't think it was a great show to put a customer to that inconvenience.

Would you have moved it?

No way.

I would have moved it.
Came back in on ordered.

Then as they started serving say my bike doesn't look safe there I shant be joining you lot for dinner and left.

Cheeky cnuts.

You MUST write them up to head office. I don't think a customer should be discriminated this way. There is NO bike parking provision demarcated so the spaces are free.
Cnuts

Would depend if I had already been up to get food or not.

If I had a plate full, I'd tell them to ram it up there arse, if I hadn't been served yet I'd probably push it as far as I could before they asked me to leave. I mean, you wanna eat, don't you?

Very Happy

I would have just said being a paying customer entitles me to a parking space. Bloody rude of them to ask you in the middle of a meal.

The fact that you had a pillion could prove that you had more people in one car space than some of the car drivers!

You were still a paying customer! However I clicked maybe as it would most definately come down to who I was sitting with.

Just on this bit, you don't have to come across as an argumentative arsehole at all - you simply state your reasons for your decision and then totally ignore whoever is talking to you.

They will soon get bored of standing there talking to themselves, and are far less likely to want to make a "scene" than you are!

Thumbs Up

Would of asked if they had a secure bike bay - in either case ask for a partial refund for being interupted in the middle of your meal.

I'd have asked where the bike parking was, when they said there wasn't any I'd have told them "it's a taxed and insured vehicle, same as the cars, so as a paying customer I have every right to park there."
If they continued I would have suggested to the whole table that we all leave and go elsewhere, they would soon back down when losing an entire table if customers.

I'd like to think I'd have come up with some pithy comment along the lines of "Do you realise you're talking to an actual customer?"
Although I'd probably have just ignored him.

My brother would 100% definately have "Pardon? I heard you the first time-ed!" him. ie.

"Can you park it at the side please, it is using a live space "
"Pardon?"
"I said can you park it at the side please, it is using a live space "
"I HEARD you the FIRST TIME!"

Then carry on with the conversation.
