 |
|
Came across this in an action: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB250N-Superdream-WHOLE-BIKE-SPARES-project-wheels-engine-forks-bars-/221317216683?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&clk_rvr_id=550676474359
Now, I have 2 reasons for being interested in this: 1, I have a hankering to do a full strip down and rebuild of a bike. I've never done it before and I think it would be a great way to learn - I was actually hunting for a basic engine to strip and rebuild when I found this.
2, I would like a "backup" bike, for when its snows, or my bike breaks down, lend to friends to train on, shit like that.
So the question is, what will it cost to get it to a road legal state (Best guess) and what does an 80s CB250 go for in the south? I'm not looking to turn a profit, but while I dn't want to go out and just buy a working one, I don't want to spend significantly more than I could simply buy one for. Thoughts? Comments? Insults? |

Minimum £1000.
Tyres alone would cost 200 unless you are happy to fit shite or 2nd hand.
Cosmetics mean nothing to road legal and you can spend as much as you have in the bank on that.
Budget £400+ to repaint. It will involve stripping the frame bare (every nut and bolt removed) everything washed/degreased and then any repairs done to frame etc. Filling and priming then top coat and lacquer.
Mechanically ???? Fcuk Nose what is inside that lump between the wheels and frame. Could be £500 to do that too.
Chain and sprockets min £120
It all adds up but it easily well do-able as it is not such an ancient machine and you can find parts quite easily.
It is up to your patience and pocket.
For my money, I would find a more desirable bike to faun over. ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair |

:D in your dreams..........
for £15 then i suppose so as it might be worth more in spares..;.....
slow, releiable ( really?? ) and a bot boring.......but yor riding technique will improve as an overtake is planned miles ahead!!
is there a v5??
how is the swing arm and rear arms on the frame.......these rot as well as the seat base, tank etc etc etc..........
engines have family faults like buggered heads, cams, rockers, ign systems, but it is a kick start one.
if you just wanted a hack and not bothered about chrome, or the lack of it, then possibily its a goer...........
you will need to consider stuff like tyres and wheel bearings, brakes, battery, lights, seat, wiring etc as well as engine.
it may be worth a £20 note, or break for spares.
however, if the corrosion didnt stop it from passing an mot, and the engine was ok apart from a ( our farther ) good service, tyres can be got for about £80 a pair..........
horses for courses, if done up on a budget ( like hand painted hammerite etc ) with second hand parts that are missing.......and you get ity cheap, it may be a good learning project....it all hangs on the camshaft/head/valve seats/crankshaft/ balance shaft etc etc etc ............
there seems to be a following for these bikes....dont know why! ____________________ nuts about bikes |

Kin'ell that's worth £15 scrap! If you wanted a project then at least get something that's got a bit of a chance! Mate of mine bought a 1914 war department dispatch bike that had less wrong with it and that ain't run for 50 years! Buy yourself a cheapy Chinese 125 that's 2 yrs old and in similar condition for £100 and rebuild that! At least the parts are cheap and available! ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |

Now that's more like it. The brakes are binding and the chain probably needs replacing, undoubtedly it needs a new battery too. But for £500 it sounds like a bargain. MY one reservation is that the seller may be a trader or he may have already looked into fixing the bike up and thought "nah, it's a moneypit". Still, well worth a look. |

Back-street Arfur-Daley type I'd say. I don't think they have been messing with it, probably dragged it out of some garage clearance and looking to turn a quick few hundred. if i was looking for a winter bike I'd give it a look. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Having a brakelight on a daytime MOT will score you a fail.
I took my CG for its daytime.test and the bloke went to wheel it in for test. He came back into the shop and handed me.some.electrical tape and said "if you want it to.pass you'd best tape that light up, its every single.light working or absolutely all of them gone.
OP, find a cheap CG125. It'll cost less, be more reliable, and do the job equally well. I have a 1990 with over 42,000 miles and it runs nicely. Just need to replace the base gasket and put new exhaust studs on it. |
