I recently read that anyone who won a big lottery can easily be unhappy. Which are..
-spend all money in a few years and no penny.
-people around you (like remote relatives) come to you and ask for money and everything.
-so you shouldn't talk anybody that you won the lottery, and keeping it secret yourself becomes a stress for you, you become you can't believe anyone.
-you can't suddenly buy a big house or expensive car otherwise people around you notice you became rich.
-you even can't tell it to your family.
-If you tell it to your wife, a battle between you and your wife starts.

The book was saying, when people get used to being rich, you can't be satisfied by something which satisfied you in the past.

So winning a lottery makes people unhappy. I won't buy it.

So I reckon only the case he avoid being unhappy will be
-save all amount of cash (or only to pay the loan)
-keep the same level of his living
-keep it secret even to his family
-he doesn't feel any stress by doing it.

Do you think you'll be happier if you won the lottery?

Yes, the phrase money can't buy happiness but I'd rather cry in my Ferrari is relevant. Laughing

I'd be happy to scoop over 1m through the lottery. I'd blast half of it on a house and bits for inside it, at least 200k on vehicles and then use the rest to get by day to day whilst still working. I'd be happy as long as I could run the 2 cars, handful of bikes and my butler, Jeeves.

In terms of a lottery win i think it can definately 'buy you happiness' - not directly but even if it just means more time off work a year/no need to work if you wish to, you have time to do and go where you want, can afford to go where you want, by whatever means you want.

I cant understand how it couldnt make someone happy Shocked it doesnt guarantee happiness, could still get knocked over a by a bus after winning, or someone die of cancer bla bla bla.

I hardly think I'd have such issues. If it was a few million pounds, careful planning and investments would see me live comfortably for the rest of my life. House bought and paid etc, nothing too crazy like helicopters, yachts, dozens of supercars etc. Just modest and sensible.

If I won 10s or 100s of millions, game on. I'd live life like a legend. Every single interest and hobby I have I would take to the max. I'd ski for much of the year, travel far and wide, own a massive house or 3 and collect classic cars and motorbikes. I'd travel the world following my favourite DJs in the summer, I'd even have my own studio and make music myself or at least allow my studio to be used by artists.

No matter what people say, I wouldn't get bored. People who get bored with millions in the bank have tiny minds. Think big, do everything you've dreamed of. Don't fill your life with possessions, there are only so many 80 inch TVs and Ferraris you can buy, but enrich yourself with what the world has to offer.

I just wouldn't give my money away to ponses, I'd only pay for nights out with the friends I already had, any new found friends, can pay for themselves!

Winning the lottery would certainly make me happy.

If I won, say a million, I'd put 500-750k on a house, the rest on a nice 50k car, 50k of bikes and insurance and the rest, if any would pay for council tax for the next load of years.

i would still be working too.

Security is happiness. We (the wife and I) can afford to buy most things we *realistically* want or need, as long as we keep getting paid. This makes me happy. But we're still slaves to the mortgage and although we've stacked it so we can afford to keep the house on either income, it's always at the back of our minds that nothing is forever. There's a risk we could end up in financial strife.

A lottery win, if you're sensible, buys you the security that the 9-5 doesn't. If you're given a huge sum of cash and you're stupid enough to waste it on crap then you've no-one to blame but yourself if it makes you unhappy.

Yeah I think the main issue is lottery win + stupidity = unhappy. If you've got half a brain you'll be fine, you'll have to deal with beggars of course but meh; you have to deal with stupid people all the time these are just a different type.

But having said that, I don't do lotto, the odds are just too crap. I'm more into scratchcards and bingo (online). You have a much higher win rate so you're closer to break even, and the 'big' prizes are generally in the thousands so are more within reach - betting a few quid each week on the highly unlikely HUGE prize or on the much more likely few thousand. £10k or so would do wonders for my happiness levels.

Made me laugh recently - that couple who won 100 odd million. Happily married for ages and got a divorce because they couldn't agree what to spend it on... Surely 50 odd million each is enough to buy the bits you want the other doesn't Rolling Eyes

I would love tens of millions of pounds and live the life of luxury and wonderment. Visiting countries that I have always wanted to, buying cars and bikes to drool over and essentially having the financial peace of mind for my family.

Having said that, I dreamt that I was given £15,000 by someone for doing a favour. That is enough to pay for IVF and stick a deposit down on a house, and that would make me and the mrs very happy. Money is not the be all and end all. I have never had a load of disposable income, but I have a loving mrs and kid, a roof over my head and more money would mean that I could take em on holiday - but without it? Meh, life goes on.

I have no idea if lots of money would make me happy. But if anyone wants to give me lots of money, I'll give it a shot and report back. I offer this service in the spirit of Xmas, good will to all men, and sheer, unadulterated greed.

Bollocks does money not buy happiness. Sure not directly, obviously, because you can't buy emotions, but you can buy a lot of things that'd make you very happy.

Like motorbikes and hookers.
What use is it without health?
Well you will have health, because you have money. Artifical biomechanical limbs? Money. Private health care? Money.

Freedom to work or not work as you feel like it? Money.

Money buys you freedom, freedom = more access to happiness
How you actually deal with it is another story, in my experience people are shit at everything.

It isn't so much that money buys happiness, but more that lack of money only stretches as far as misery.

Millions wouldn't make me happy.

It would however remove the nagging feeling in the back of my mind all the time about old age poverty and give me some security.

Maybe they both fancied trading each other in for a newer, younger and more attractive model now that they were each 50 million times better looking and irresistible than before.

Not many fat, short, ugly and single multi millionaires out there - funny that...... Laughing

This. I don't mind the thought of working to live but occasionally I lay awake at night wondering how I'm ever going to retire. Taking into consideration I feel too knackered to work at 43 now and then and it's something to think about. A reasonable lottery win, enough that I could put aside for a comfortable retirement, would do me. That said, I'd have to start doing the lottery for that particular pipe dream to come true.

Thanks for your responses!
I'm in the morning and can't respond to each now but I read all of your comments. I felt I may lose my friends if I won the lottery. Or I may lose the motivation for my work. I felt both of them make me seriously unhappy and wanted to hear from you about this topic.
I felt most of your comments were more positive than me.
Thanks again.

If I won a million pounds it would definitely make me happy. It would sort out a car, house with plenty of nice furniture and gadgets, holiday etc.
If I won the euro millions in excess of 100 million, I would be ecstatic just as anyone else would be. But I can honestly see myself becoming a massive cunt after a while.
When there is almost NOTHING you can't afford apart from super yachts, planes and islands how can you live an even remotely normal life?
Everyone says the money won't get to their head and they'll be responsible but I know for a fact if I had that sort of money now in my mid 20s I'd progressively get more reckless with it and less likable.
