I wouldn't put anything on the brake surfaces, however long its being left.
If its not been out on the road to get plastered in salt prior to the rust its probably not anything to worry about - light surface rust is quite common when you leave it outside, or even in a garage with the air moisture. When it comes to riding it next give it a light brush with some wire-wool or a kitchen-scourer and most will probably come off straight away. The rest will be gone within a few miles of braking usually.
If it has/you do go out and its been particularly bad since then give it a quick soapy wash down to get the salt off before storing it again. I've been equally paranoid about the slightest spec of rust in the past, but these things don't corode away and die overnight it takes lots of neglect - it'll be fine |
