Hi, probably a bit of a noobish question, but my head gasket has been blowing and I'm going to change it tomorrow. My question is do you need to use a gasket sealant when you put a new head gasket on or do you just remove the old one and replace and reassemble?

Thanks,

Sam.

depends on the type of gasket i think?

but ive never used any sealant as it can block up oil/water galleries, but i dont think youl have many of those in a CG125 head.

Thumbs Up

i only ever use a thin smear of grease on any gasket, unless the mating surfaces are really rough you shoudnt need owt else Smile

Most modern gaskets already have a thin coating of sealant.

Looking at the pictures, a CG125 head gasket is a coated fibre gasket with sealant already on it and a built-in, steel fire-ring.

This adds up to you wanting clean, smooth and de-greased mating surfaces. At most a TINY smear of grease on the fire-ring

Cheers for all the replies, change went smoothly and quite enjoyed doing the work myself.

Not sure what caused the problem but the metal ring was warped on it. Will see how it goes with the replacement part and research what caused it.

Thanks again for the advice,

Sam.
