Appology if posted before. I've only just been made aware.

I picked this up from a car site but I'd think applicable to any vehicle with tax disc...

End of car tax transfer

‘For sale, taxed’ to become illegal in 2.7 million private car sales

From 1 October 2014, car owners who want to sell their vehicles privately will be unable to offer the ‘unexpired tax’ incentive to potential buyers, warns the AA. The proposed switch from relying on the display of a paper tax disc to a solely electronic record will end the transfer of the balance of car tax to the car's new owner....

For AA article if you click here.

So private sales you'd have to arrange insurance and then tax before picking it up. How quickly will insurance database be updated now? (as no insurance = no tax iirc).

As long as you can still sell your remaining tax back to dvla then it won't make much odds. Just means you need an Internet connection when you buy a car so you can tax it before you leave

Except you can't if no insurance or the database hasn't been updated or they've cocked-up the information.

Just noticed my old car insurance certificate said I could drive any other car 3rd party and it didn't state that that car also had to be insured. Useful but now how would I legally drive a car (or bike) home?

Is this just more revenue raising stuff? I can see the glint appearing in some politician's eye when someone says "Hey, you know what? We could use this to make a bit of extra cash."

Seems like a needless change to make that's just going to result in a few people saying "Oh, really officer? I didn't realise the law had just changed".

Hell, if I was in power I'd be changing the law every day, I'd need the money to buy a private island and security force after my term so the plebs didn't come after me for vengeance.

To the nearest month right?

Kind of like council car parks.

Where they put 0-4 hours £7. So even if you want to stay for only 30 minutes you have to pay the £7.

yeah would appear to be another cash raising excercise without thought to us lot and the ball ache that will probably arise from it. They are probably well aware many will not bother to do anything until they get home and so they can get more revenue in fines from their revenue collection agency...sorry, plod.. And no one has mentioned the savings they are going to make by not having to post out and print new discs. I cant see we are going to get a lower price because we do not get anything in the post!

Clever buggars really.

Surely the tax 'refund' will only happen once the V5C has landed on some Taffy's desk at the DVLA? In which case, whose to know for the intervening week (s)?

So the VED (car tax) is going to become PED (Personal car tax)

So I really feel sad for the millions that do not have internet access.....

Why not just simply drop VED altogether.....

Easy solution to that; allow insurance companies to sell you road tax at the point of sale of your cover. Of course... with an admin fee. :/

With the current scheme as it is, you can still get stopped by the police for having "no proof of insurance" even if you are insured. All because the database they use can take a few days to be updated. So it's always been an issue really.

Of course.

And when they put the tax up they'll be able to get the increase out of you immediately instead of having to wait up to 12 months for you to buy a new disk.

I find myself agreeing with Hetzer. More and more frequently. Shocked Laughing

Guys, you are looking at it all wrong.

Only the private buying proles will be DVLA'd to tardfinity as those in charge buy their cars brand new from a dealer. With the extra revenue from Taffy shenanigans and nearest month cancellation scams bonuses they'll be able to buy from even shinier forecourts with even nicer free coffee.

It's a win win really... Rolling Eyes

I have heard that you will be able to do tax monthly by direct debit.

If this is true I will be happy as the car costs a load.

Umm, You do know that they do not check for insurance any more, only MOT.

Obviously they thought they were losing out on money. WHo cares if they aren't insured when you can still get 250 quid road tax.

You're only exempt from Tax whilst going to an MOT if you don't already have a valid MOT in place.

This is a non story. Unless the person you're buying the bike off cancels the tax before you ride away there is no issue.

There's also no reason why you can't buy the tax in advance. The vehicle needs to be insured but you don't need to be the insurer.

Seems a lot of people are getting excited about nothing.
