Pre-registered bike

Have any of you ever bought one or considered buying one? I am wondering if I should or should not.

I've bought two "pre-registered" SH300s - that is, as a second owner but less than 100 miles.

I got decent discount - closer to 4000 than 4700 list price - and two almost new bikes.

The first bike was as new.

The second looks like it was bought, the owner tried it out on the motorway, decided it needed a screen, took off almost all of the plastics, drilled the headlight plastics to make a homemade screen (to get access to the threaded holes for the Honda screen option), then decided to give up on it and clumsily put it back together, sometimes using the wrong bolts in various places, sometimes replacing the bolts with almost equivalent versions. I had the drilled plastics replaced by the dealer at no cost, swapped around the screws that had been misplaced using the older SH300 for reference, and ordered new screws to replace the almost equivalent ones I discovered later down the line. A few mounting tabs on the fairings were snapped by the ape who took it apart, but this is slightly more forgivable as Honda fairings are usually very tightly fitted with a lot of redundancy in the tabs.

I reckon the guy who had it before me was a bit of a nutter. The owner's manual had been ripped apart, with all the non-English sections ripped out, the Italian and Spanish entries in the contents inked over with a marker, the translations of "Owner's Manual" on the front similarly inked over. The guy seemed to have a pathological hate of the continent.

He also put tipp-ex on some of the control buttons on the handlebars, so that things like the kill switch didn't just have debossed icons, but white infill debossed icons.

So give it a good look over to find out anything odd, and haggle the dealer down / get them to fix anything that's weird. But it's unlikely that the previous owner was as much of a nutter as mine was, and you'll just get a good price on an as-new machine.

The downside, of course, is an extra owner on the V5. But if you intend on keeping the machine for a fair while, this isn't really a downside.

Quite often it is done by the dealer so they meet their quotas.

I bought my Mrs a pre reg Clio that had 6 miles on the clock and saved myself about £800.

My Trophy is an ex demonstrator which is a bit different as it had about 1500 miles on the clock but I saved £2500 on the going price.

I've no problem with pre reg.

Yup, I bought a car that was registered to the dealer, delivery miles, no problems, healthy whack off the list price before haggling. It made not a jot of difference to the price when I sold it on.

A bike, well, be wary about CBFs that have been ridden for 3 days...

My old Aprilia AF1 Futura was technically pre registered I suppose. Dealer registered it and did 70km on it before I had it.

Not a bike, but my dad bought his present car pre-registered. 12 miles on the clock when he took delivery. It was ordered by a chap who pulled out at the last minute, so was registered to a finance company. That was 13 years ago. He saved a good 10-15% on list price as well.

Most pre registered vehicles are ones that have been registered on the last day of a month by the dealer to get that dealership a 'bonus' as its technically a sale.

You tend to get them significantly cheaper and with just delivery miles. The only downside is that your brand new car/bike will already be on 2 owners. Not a biggie, but if (for whatever reason) you decide to change the vehicle (get bored) within a few months, it 'may' not look good to a potential buyer as they may think its a dog as 2 owners have given up on it in a few months.

I don't know whether to go for a pre-reg '13 ER6F for £5,000 or a used one. There is a used one that's £4700 with a top box and 1,500 miles. For only £300 extra (or even £400/£500 if you take off the top box, which I will likely buy anyway) I could get an almost new one.

The £2k you lose on many new bikes the moment you ride away from the dealer needs reducing if you can. Pre-reg is a good way to maximise the second hand value of your bike. I have had 3 pre reg bikes in recent years. Just bought an SV650s with 0 miles - £4199 instead of £4800 for the new bike next to it - no difference. They even gave me the warranty from when I bought it rather than when reg 3 months ago. I would always go pre reg if possible.

Well the £3,100 is in decent enough condition, 11k miles, 2012. Compared to the others it doesn't do much for me. The price is what keeps it on my radar. Human nature to always want more. If someone said 3k for this, take it or leave it, I'd take it. However, it's the same with the other ones as well!
