It was last year in the summer. We were going to Great Yarmouth for a week and for the first time me and my dad were riding the bikes there. Two weeks prior to going away I was riding out and my bike had a partial seizure and was making a very obvious tapping noise.

That weekend we stripped the engine out to find it was piston slap. According to a local mechanic it was due to the hot weather that week as my bike is air cooled. I had checked my oil before the ride. Anyway we would have had to get the engine bored out and get a new piston etc. Instead we manged to find a crashed CBF 125 from Ebay and just swapped the engines over.

We managed to get to Great Yarmouth just fine and the bike was fine also the whole week except for the Friday. I went out for what could be my last ride out in Yarmouth by myself and I got down a road just outside where we were staying and it's around 1/4 mile long or so.

As I got to the end I was slowing down for the junction and as I down shifted I heard this clonk then when I released the clutch nothing was happening. It was like I was in neutral. I tried different gears and nothing was happening. I pushed it onto the corner which luckily is a wide bit of path so wasn't stopping people walking by.

I initially thought something was wrong with the gears or clutch then I realized the chain was slack and near enough touching the floor. There wasn't anything I could do there so I pushed it all the way back luckily not a heaving bike being a 125 and we took the front sprocket cover off to find the front sprocket had come off. Good job it happened when I was slowing down and only do around 10 mph and not doing 60 down a dual carriageway.

We managed to get bolts to bolt it back on and it got me home ok.
We think what happened was that the people who we brought the crashed CBF off started to undo the sprocket but realized they couldn't easily get the chain off as it's an endless chain. Then they just left it or did it up but not tight enough. Otherwise not sure why it fell off as we never touched the front sprocket when we put the engine in.

Fascinating.

Shall I tell you how you got the nickname "Dull" at the Bike Cha?

They probably dropped the sprocket off the splines when removing the engine to give themselves some wiggle-room without having the gain some slack in the chain by removing the back wheel. Since they have to remove the cover anyway to get the chain off (unless they cut it) the obvious thing to do is pull the sprocket off and let the chain dangle on the spline.

Could even be that they forgot about the chain and suddenly realised the engine was hanging off it after they removed all the bolts.

I suggest you get a different mechanic, one who knows what he is talking about.

Are you sure that they aren't using the word 'sprocket' as a euphemism for the word 'spastic'?
