Well I had my first Mod 2 today and it went a bit strangely, I sent the following e-mail to the DSA which explains what happened:

======================================

Hi

I was booked in for my Big Bike M2 Practical test today.

Application reference number: XXXXXXXX.
Driving License Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

About 20-25 minutes into the test I was instructed to turn right at a roundabout on to a dual carriageway. I followed this instruction and noticed the examiner was unable to make the turn safely. I then heard lots of static and muffled noises in my ear which was obviously the examiner making his next instruction due to our separation.

As I had not heard the instruction I had no idea what i was supposed to do, i therefore decided the safest and most appropriate course of action was to return to the test centre and await the arrival of the examiner.

The examiner explained that he had said I should leave the dual carriageway on the next slip road and he would find me, as previously explained, the instruction was indecipherable through the equipment. If I had heard the instruction I would have followed it, there is no logical explanation for me to return to the test centre without completing the full test.

The examiner said it was not a fail as he had not seen enough of my riding to make a full decision and that I should rebook. My instructor spoke to the examiner and explained to me that I need to contact the DSA and explain what had happened in order for the situation to be rectified.

I had to take a day off work and pay £75 for this test for it to end abruptly through no fault of my own.

I would like a test rebooked for free and as soon as possible at the same test centre please.

Kind Regards

======================================

In hindsight, I know it makes sense to take the next slip road and wait for the examiner but at the time I had no way of knowing where he would go and was reluctant to play a game of cat and mouse.

Anyone had or know of anyone else who has been through a similar experience? What are my chances of getting money back or a test quicker than 2 weeks? Sad

EDIT: Still no reply from DSA about reimbursement but I have now passed! Very Happy

That's a bit of bad luck. I thought they were supposed to give you an instruction that should you not hear for whatever reason, just press on along the same course & they will have to catch you up? At some point I guess you could ride into the sea...

Exactly, hitting the dual carriageway meant I built up a huge amount of distance rather fast and it merged onto the A1 which sealed the deal.

I blame your instructor for not preparing you for this possibility. Did you never get separated from your group during your DAS? I would have carried on for a bit and pulled over at a safe spot that's easily visible from the main road -- the first layby -- and just waited. I would have done this because that's what I was told to do during the course, and it's what I had to do several times. Maybe they think about this more in London, where traffic makes it very easy to get separated.

My examiner said if we were fully lost, to just pull over and if we hadn't changed course then he would find me.

If it is true that you couldn't hear his instruction then I too would want a free re-test.

He said if we get seperated appropriate instructions would be given over the headset, he obviously didn't bank on it not working.

Booked in for 29th at 08:30 (hello frost cancellation) so see how it goes.

It is bloody annoying when the intercoms break up, especially at such an important time. You'd think in this day and age we could at least have clear reliable intercoms, we get crystal clear photos from robots on the moon ffs!

I've not tested this and if the comms don't work it may be useless but worth a go.

Most of the radios have just an earpiece for the students, now we use radios at work for communication to the machine operators and similar to most radios the actual handset has the push to talk button. So unplug the earpiece and speak into it like a normal two way radio. You can then hopefully update the instructor/examiner.

You may get a bollocking possibly but if your in a safe place to use a handheld I can't see the issue. Also it may not work and your still lost. I would then phone the test centre and explain the situation and my location.

Never mind, suppose hindsight is a wonderful tool. Plus if it's the same examiner he might make a bit more effort to keep up?

Oh dear. Well on my test I spent the whole time trying to lose the examiner in the hope the test would be over quicker and he would have less chance of seeing me do something he could fail me for.

When i was doing my DAS training i got told that if we ever got separated to pull over at a safe place. but NEVER turn off because he won't know where I would be.

It's a shame with what happened to you in the mod 2, hopefully they will get you sorted with another mod 2 free of charge Thumbs Up

Ae you expecting to work in a factory or trying to pass a test on the most dangerous piece of equipment (for the number of deaths per user) on the planet?

For fuck sake, use a bit of nous. You'll need to use it when you aren't doing your test.

I would have found a safe place to stop and then waited until the examiner caught up with me....

Bad luck really, examiner should have been more clear with you with what he expected should you separate and lose communication. I was told to shake my head if I didn't understand a message and to pull up where safe If we were separated, if this was on a main road then continue and he would catch up. Can't rely on those radios, got a bunch of noise instead of instructions many times. Hopefully you'll get another test sorted for you.

I would have pulled over but it was a pretty major dual carriageway with nowhere safe to do so.

I've accepted it as a loss. At least I got 20 mins of test experience, silver linings and all that!

Confused I'm not following you there at all. What are you trying to say? We're saying the same thing, aren't we? Find a safe place to pull over and wait. The instructor and/or the examiner should have told him to do this before the test, is all I'm saying. Whether that's "common sense" or not is debatable. If not on a test, it's perfectly reasonable to return to the test centre too.

I was told to go straight ahead if i lost communication with examiner, how long were you waiting for the examiner to get back ? the sound quality from the system my instructor was using ( 3 diff instructors ) was awful, lots of white noise and mumbling was all i could hear for most of my lessons, i was constantly stopping and telling them i can't hear, and remember once, i didn't hear anything for 30 mins i pulled over said " the system must be broke i can't hear anything " only for him to tell me he hadn't been talking, that was on my advanced test lol
Good luck with your retest Very Happy

This, there should always be instruction to pull over and wait as soon as you notice you have been seperated, where safe ofc.

You may be able to claim some of you expenses back if you use this form from the DSA.

I am not saying they will do a damn thing but it is worth a try....

Pleased to say I passed my Mod 2 this morning with 6 minors Smile

Good result considering I thought I had failed on 3 separate occasions!!

Sorting out insurance, early finish from work, plenty of daylight to try out the bike in our glorious weather.
