Sick of the typical SMIDSY attitude of cagers (never realised the problem until I saw the light last year), so decided to not give them any excuse.

https://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz157/mikeallen3lly3900/DSC01417a_zps02ef6749.jpg

If they look and think
GOOD GREIF WTF is that?
Oh God, a copper. (The real one had checkered bands on the shoulders)
or
Look at that tw@t, he's almost glowing.

Either way, they'll have seen me.

Not going to assume this is a foolproof visual aid, but if it helpd keep me out of the meat wagon, then I'm cool with it.

Besides, cars I have pulled up behind tend to slow down a bit, so makes overtaking a bit easier Smile

<--- approved.

I went orange specifically to not look like a copper though. No sense in winding folk up once you're past - or worse, as you're passing.

Don't rely on high viz, rely on your actions on the bike. Defensive riding is the key.

I've not had anything even close to a SMIDSY for years and years. The couple that have been a bit iffy have been where I've not been on the ball and anticipating the moronic actions of other road users. Entirely down to me, not down to them. They don't know they are being morons at the end of the day.

High viz is bad if its going to give you a false sense of security.

Fine, as long as you don't ride any differently. In other words, forget you are wearing hi-vis, and always assume they don't see you. Lurid colours can actually be worse if it makes you ride through junctions without slowing, covering the brakes and watching the nincompoop in the side road (Who Is Looking Right At You) with extreme suspicion...

The main evidence for hi-vis is the Hurt report (decades before hi-vis was even a thing) and a thoroughly discredited British Medical Journal report that is still the first Google hit on most searches, even though it didn't adjust for experience. Unfortunately, we still don't have any real evidence that day-glo is any better than black-clad ninja and the advocates ("it can't hurt") can't explain away why there's no decline (per rider mile) in SMIDSYs in the last few decades.

I grudgingly wear an orange waistcoat (much like Roger's) in especially murky conditions because, well, it can't hurt... But I don't think it makes me any more visible. At best, it will remove any excuse to reduce the insurance payout to my next-of-kin.

Agreed, I still ride like they are trying to kill me, but it is nice when you see them take that second look, it gives you a bit more confidence in their abilities, whilst still relying on your ob's and avoidance skills should it all go breaasts vertical.

I've learned my lesson with hi-vis gear. Got hein gericke cruise daylight goretex jobbie, while it was initially bright, it is now filthy and no amount of cleaning will make it look better, very grubby looking now.

I'd get black and throw a bib over it for the winter commute. Just my 2 pence.

If they can't see me on a white bike wearing a white helmet with the 2 headlights on dipped, then they obviously aren't looking and hi-vis isn't going to make a bit of difference.

I wear a bright red helmet and a yellow jacket as well, and people still pull out in front of me. Being on loser plates probably doesn't help that though.

Agree with Conker on this one; nice for fair weather riding but do a few trips in 'orrible weather with road salt flying about and before you know it your shiny yellow hivis is as clarty as cheap whore's vocubulary.

Use a bib or a decent reflective brace, easy to wipe down and takes no extra bulk over your normal gear.

Looks good, a little like this which I'm considering getting:

https://www.motolegends.com/jackets/hi-vis-motorcycle-vest.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=product&gclid=CMfHianr2rwCFSEHwwoddUoAIg

Maybe a little too police-y, not sure...

I've been riding in all-black including mostly a black helmet and tinted visor for years and haven't had any near misses except my one accident. I'd agree its more important and really only important to ride defensively. It probably doesn't hurt to wear high-vis, but I genuienely don't believe it makes much difference.

When high-viz first came about it was a very un-natural weird colour to see. Now days high vis is everywhere in excess, on and off the road - its just absorbed as idle-background colour like anything else for the majority of people I think rather than being 'look at that big green thing!'' Razz

Having said that - i've recently got high-vis textiles Laughing just happened to be the best fit. Feel like a giant banana in it at the moment Thinking

Haven't really seen them around here though. Living out in the sticks, north of Watford. So probably will make people do a double take, which means at least they've seen you once. Which has to be good.

P.S. If you know where I can get one for the dog(s) let me know Wink

If you want to get noticed nearly all the time then not enough, you need something like the think bike advert. Problem with Hi Viz is it's over used, every one wears it for everything now; you need something unique to stand out. Still I bet you would have plenty of people that can't see you.

Do you think someone just picked highvis yellow for shits and giggles? It the result of studies into which colours are seen and processed by the brain most easily.

High Vis Yellow IS seen more easily than all other colours.

High Vis Orange is used on railways because yellow means something else. It often known as railway high vis, or railway orange

It is good, but its not as good as yellow

Those police ones irk me.

Saw a horse up ahear the other day. Slowed right down and so on.
THEN saw they had one of those. Was sorely tempted to speed up and give them a friendly parp on the horn - after all, a Police Horse would be very well trained, so no need to make extra effort Smile.
