Hi folks,

I've just bought a bike that had been imported from Switzerland. It has been MOT'd but now I need to send the V55/5 form off to DVLA to tax & register for UK use.

I need to get the bike insured beforehand, as they want the certificate of insurance sending with the form.

Any suggestions for who will insure it, as nearly all the ones I've tried want the registration number of the bike -- can't get one yet until I've sent the V55/5 form off along with an insurance certificate!!! Catch 22 time.

I think you can insure via the frame numbers!

A few insurers (Carole Nash I think being one) will insure on a VIN.

Thanks guys. I've been trying to insure it online but I will try phoning a few tomorrow, as all the online applications insist on having vehicle reg number, fair enough.

Google which will accept insuring without a reg first, you'll just end up listening to endless hold music if not.

Use saynoto0870.com too - save you a fortune Very Happy

I think only Carole Nash and 1/2 others will insure on a VIN and at extra expense but still, worth a chance.

Rampdale will also insure on the VIN.

What were the costs associated with importing your Swiss bike?

Does it need some form of type approval and a UK headlight?

If you import a vehicle permanently (i.e. not on holiday) you need to swap the headlights over. I know one of the requirements of re-registering a UK vehicle in France is swapping the lights over, you can't use the little reflectors Halfords flog.

Presume it's similar for Switzerland.

I didn't import the bike personally, I bought it off someone who did, so I really don't know the costs involved.

From what I can gather, if the vehicle is the 'same' as UK spec and already sold in the UK, this saves on import duty. Also, no type approval required if vehicle is 2nd hand/over 10 years old - which mine is.

It had already been MOT'd and the only advisory was that it had got headlamp converter fitted. Not intending using it at night time/in cacky weather as it will be displayed at shows, so it will be dry use only!

The DVLA site has a useful guide about importing vehicles.

Cheers

Chris
