I'm going to be changing the silencers on the Bonneville. It's a relatively easy job so I'll be doing it myself. The only question I have is should I be using some sort of silicon or lubricant to connect the silencer to the exhaust system? Or is it ok just to connect them bare?

If so, what should I be using?

Cheers.

Something like this for example:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/V-tech-Clear-Silicone-Gasket-Sealant/dp/B00442MGVQ/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1391869567&sr=8-6&keywords=silicone+RTV

Is 250c ok?

EDIT: after a bit more research I've come across Permatex. But it's damn expensive!

I guess in an ideal world I'd just use a bit from the bike shop.

you may find there was some sealant on from the factory, but they won't supply it

just some normal clear silicone will do, but they will pop and bang like you have an air leak anyway

Flue sealant from a plumber's merchant, if you have to use something.

My exhaust came with a recommendation to use silicon sealant, but I used gun gum.

Silicon sealent is flexible but (relatively) low temperature.
Gun gum is for high temperatures, but isn't particularly flexible.

Try one. If it's no good, try the other. Each one will cost about £2-3 for more than enough.

Note: If you aren't planning on using it for anything else, use the aerosol (hair-mousse) type of silicon sealent rather than the 'gun' style.

Cheers Stalk. Looks like good stuff. Going to have a chat with the guy that makes the exhaust tomorrow and see what he says.
