The news that a Salvadorian Fisherman managed to stay alive for 13 months whilst adrift he said he survived by eating raw fish and birds as well as drinking turtle blood, urine and rainwater.

His compadre Ezequiel Cordoba, whom he set sail with starved to death four months into the ordeal because he would vomit raw fish and birds and fell overboard.

Do you believe him? something smells fishy

I doubt he ate his shipmate. More likely story is he killed him for something and had to run away because of it. He does look surprisingly healthy for a man who lived on blood, urine and raw fish for a year. He must have eaten a lot of raw fish.

I think that after a few weeks the man love set in. Then around the 4 month mark, there was a lover's tiff and the other bloke had a hissy fit and stormed off.

What Percy said.

Whole story sounds very suspect. I expect he spent the last year gorging on tropical fruits and other delicacies somewhere quiet. Then decided he'd been 'missing' long enough and all the evidence of his pal had been eaten up by the fish, grew a beard, and turned up 'lost'.

Looks like Robin Williams is a shoe-in to play him in the film.

Reminds me of Red Dwarf.

The scene where they are talking about captain Oates.

Doubt it, he didn't need to. If he lasted that long, why would he need to eat his mate? His body would of been edible for a week tops, really no point in the grand scale of things.

He may have killed him however... That is more believable

They'll be able to do tests on him to see what sort of nutrition he's been getting, no doubt. I highly doubt he's been surviving off just fish and blood for 12 months or whatever it is - he looks too healthy. Most people who've been in that situation look like they've been hit by a bus.

How long would he've been able to store a person for? And how much nutrition do you think he would've got? Either he survived for 13 months or he survived for 12 months and 3 weeks with 1 week in the middle where he gorged himself on human flesh.

His health and condition are un related to whether he did eat the other guy or not, given the length of time they were at sea.

Clutchy's right - we'll never know whether he killed him or not, but the eating him was unnecessary...

Thank you for sharing your experience.
No need to add which one you were if it's too painful a memory Wink Very Happy

On topic, he's the only one who knows and also the mind can be tricked into false memories. Personally I'd doubt it, but that's just me.

It takes a year for us to consume our own body weight in food, right? So by the time you've discounted bones, stomach and other non-consumables you're probably looking at around 7-8 months worth of food, and that's if you can make the meat last that long.

If I'd been in that position, I wouldn't kill him for the purpose but I certainly wouldn't waste the meat. Either eat it directly or use it as bait. You're in a survival situation, you need every resource!
