My Hyosung GT650r had done 11000 now, Would it be the time to worry about valve clearances now, or could that wait (it has shims, if that helps)

Thanks Very Happy

It says inspect every 6000km, which is the same interval for an oil change. Is this a bit excessive?

Shims don't need attention anywhere near as often as the locknut type, but if you've already skipped the first recommended check it would be wise to do them soon - and not need worry for another 10,000 miles.

Is it a simple enough job to inspect them myself? My garage quoted £200 Sad

Or as doggone said, could it be left another 10,000 miles?

I would have them checked, if they say one or two had drifted quite a lot - or nothing needed doing - it would help you decide how long you dare leave it next time.

The garage are charging mainly for time spent stripping things off to access them.
Once the feeler gauges can be used actually changing shims if required does not take long.

It's a bike with no current importer and a limited pool of potential buyers.

If you're realistically planning on riding it into the ground, check 'em. If you're going to punt it on soon (where soon just means "5 miles before it shits itself"), I wouldn't bother, you won't get that money back.

Thanks for the replies. A dilemma I have is that I need to change the oil and filter soon, and from what I gather the oil has to be drained to check the valves Confused

Valves are at the top - oil sinks to the bottom.

You might lose an egg-cup full from under the rocker covers
but no need to drain. Never did on a beetle engine and that's a flat four.

200 sounds excessive unless it includes required adjustment/parts etc. A decent mech should be able to check them in 1 hour/1.5 hour I'd of thought.

But then I suppose decent mechs are thin on the ground.

I'd assumed £200 is including a service, but maybe not if OP is doing the oil and filter himself. Might be worth listing (and asking if you don't know) exactly what's included in that quote.

The £200 was for oil and filter, plus valve clearances (not including parts) and carb balance (which was done 5000 miles ago anyway). I suppose if a carb balance isn't needed and and I do the oil and filter my self it might not be so much.

Best practice is to sync the carbs after a valve clearance anyway

HA HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA

Oh.

You're serious.

Tell them to fuck off and do a basic vehical maintenance course at the local college. It'll be cheaper.

2008 or older? I wouldn't spend a penny more on it than you need to.
