As a companion to my false economies thread, as a result of the house moving experience I also have the following knowledge to impart.

Some things seem outrageously expensive but are worth every penny.

I give you....

Frog Tape - £6.50 a bleedin roll but has changed my life

Amaretto di Saronno biscuits.

(the ones with the wrappers that fly up in the air in a flamed funnel when you balance them on your hand and set fire to them)

Any other sort are NOT amaretto biscuits.

Soooooo ... it's clear you lot are an economy type of audience.

*surges forth, bearing aloft the standard for reassuring expensiveness*

Jam: Bonne Maman or Tiptree
Economy "fruit-flavoured" jam is hideous.

Coffee.
Not instant coffee*, I mean coffee.
Prefer Blue Mountain Java for special occasions but finances often compromise on a more affordable roast for daily consumption.

Thumbs Up

* in the spirit of fairness best 'instant' I've tried is the Millicano type.

Jeans, shit jeans look shit and don't last, I got a few sets of branded ones and found them much more effective. I got my first pair of 501's the other week, I don't think I ever want to wear anything else.

Pants, cheap pants are shit, they feel shit and fall to bits. Pringle and Ted Baker are my favs comfortable all day Thumbs Up

Helmets, first off I don't want to say that I think more expensive helmets are safer. There is plenty of arguments for £60 5* SHARP rated lids. However more expensive lids ARE better allround. Also I think more economical if you wear them alot. The easiest way to compare is think of them as cars. For arguments sake, compare a Mondeo to a S series Merc (assuming performance and safety is roughly the same) people will say the Mondeo is just as quick and just as safe why should I spend twice as much on the Merc. I'll tell you why. It's quieter its more comfortable the interior is nicer the paint is better, the design is better.

I ride ~10,000 miles a year and done so for the 8.5 years and essentially I have had 4 lids in that time.

£100 HJC
£180 AGV
£370 Arai
£300 Shoei

and the length of time they lasted before they 'wore out'

HJC < 1 year
AGV 1 years
Arai 3.5 years (killed by crash)
Shoei 3 years (still going)

The more expensive lids and much better for someone doing big mileage IMO. Thumbs Up

Most modern phones have a decent enough coating on the screen to protect it already. My 4s has been going 2 years no screen protector and no marks on it. I'm not especially careful with it. I just don't put it in the same pocket as my keys.

However I do agree cheap ones are shit. Laughing

I've had my "RedZed" £10 helmet with black visor since Xmas 2009, I still use it, it fits superb even after being worn constantly for 2 years, then used during summers. Yes its got a crappy little vent cover missing but its still in more than usable condition.

£10 brand new, delivered. Laughing

Compared to my AGV which snapped in 2 at 30mph. Boss. Laughing

I've done a good 25k miles in my old 75 quid RST helmet and its still wearable Razz

From the 6 helmets i've had its litearlly seemed entirely pot-luck which ones are best quality in terms of comfort/durability/functionality.

Safety wise only ones come into play, but i'm still very skeptical about mo' money = mo' safety with all of them.

Admittedly though, I am scum that wears cheap clothing Crying or Very sad

Most expensive " branded " jeans and shreddies are made in the same sweatshops as other brands.
My Tesco jeans are still comfy , looking good and going strong 5 years down the line.

I've got by with 2 pairs of jeans the last 4-5 years. Both cost 10-15 quid.

Except for the label on the inside of the waistline they're identical to loads of jeans I see for 50-100 quid, never got the whole designer-clothes thing it seems mad to piss money away like that Shocked

Beer. Give me Peroni Gran Riserva over cheap supermarket stuff any day.

Cheese.

Swimming goggles. Had cheap crap as a child that wouldn't last a holiday. The pair I am just about to replace were a significant cost but I got five years out of them. In the end Chlorine will always kill goggles after a while regardless of how well they are looked after.
