My understanding is that there is no difference in the requirements for rider and pillion.
You could take a blind pillion and they'd still need a clear visor.
I would be astonished if they could get themselves prosecuted or convicted for it though. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Time to tempt fate
I've been wearing this (or something very similar to it) on the sharp end of a bike since 1981
https://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff426/zedheadchap/DSCF0949.jpg
Not once have I ever been pulled because of it, or questioned about it, when I've had a tug for something else, despite the fact that it's (supposedly) illegal in every way.
As a result, I wouldn't spend a nanosecond worrying about a pillion wearing a tinted visor. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

Saw a chap getting pulled over the other day, for what appeared to be his tinted visor. Was on Tower Bridge, where the City Police quite commonly have a whole squad pulling over anybody and everybody for all kinds of misdemeanour's. If they're there, they'll invariable be 2-4 vehicles pulled over for a chat.
Back to topic, it was around 5:30 ish, clear day, but sun starting to go down. Chap was right in front of me, going nice and slow, nowt obviously wrong with his riding, copper hadn't even seen his plate, but he got pulled aside, and copper was pointing at his visor... No idea of outcome, as I left them to it. ____________________ Beginner Biker Adventures Blog

As opposed to just regularly illegal?
If they are sitting astride the motor cycle and on a proper seat securely fixed to the motor cycle behind the driver’s seat, and wearing proscribed protective headgear (including an appropriate clear visor, if fitted) that is securely fastened to their head, then what offence is completely being committed, and by whom?
I'm not aware of any construction and use regulation that says "No blindies", for example. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

And how strict were they on the actual course about it?
|
Dunno - everyone was playing nicely and wearing legal visors. Plus, it lashed it down and was like riding into the apocalypse - I doubt I could have seen my own speedo if I'd had my dark visor on.

This one was organised by a group of us where I work, so we did it from our work premises. There were 6 police bike officers there though; two did the morning's theory stuff and the rest joined for the afternoon's road riding (2-to-1 riders to observers).

All bikes on our group went out OK - there were a few modified. They only noted that I had insurance and it matched my name and the reg number of the bike. Mine has a BS-stamped after-market can, crash-bungs, dark screen and LED rear light which never raised a murmur. My assessor just asked me "are you happy that your bike is safe and road-worthy?" to which I answered "yes" and off we went. Pretty sure he'd clocked my nice deep tyre tread already. ____________________

Cheers for that. Think I'll wait until next year to do it. There's only one date left that I can do for this year, plus I checked with insurance and it's only gonna be a shade over £30 to add unlimited number of mods now (although they only pay out for standard bike), but to do it mid policy is an extra £40 admin fee. Next year with extra years NCB and experience etc it'll probably be more like £20-25 to add it at renewal time.
Probably better waiting anyway, gives me a chance to pick a date that suits, and to get more used to the bike in the mean time, I've only done about 2000 miles since I got it, and had to learn the roads in two different areas of the country before I could start riding in a way that I was gaining proper confidence in the bike. |
