The bike is about 6 months old and has always had this problem on and off. It's so inconsistent that I told Triumph I'd like to try get to the bottom of it myself before I have to give it to them for a couple of days. I need it for work so I've tried to hold on to it for as long as possible.

I finally managed to film the problem, it's difficult to explain to someone.

So before I book myself in to Triumph (the bike still has a 2 year warranty) - I'd like to see if I can diagnose and fix it myself with your help.

(To start it you need to hold the clutch in, and make sure it's in neutral - the problem occurs with the side stand up, and with the side stand down)

Any ideas?

Thank you.

So you hold your finger on the button, and the starter just cuts out?

If so your fault lies with the starter circuit, or (more likely) there's a dodgey connection in the switchgear.

It might just be me but you don't actually hold the starter button till it starts, you just press it and immediately let go. The time it started in the video was when you held the starter button in for longer than a quarter of a second.

That's how it looked to me, hence I wondered if the start was cutting.

That's because it cuts out and if I held it down it wouldn't be doing anything. Almost as though an anti theft or safety mechanism is cutting in.

Correct. I can hold my finger down as long as I like but it'll cut out and won't continue starting.

Fortunately no. The bike has been flawless while riding. It's just this little hiccup which is causing a slight headache.

Probably the best idea if it's still under warranty terms. Otherwise I'd give it a squirt of WD-40 (or similar) into the switchgear unit - and then take it apart to clean it properly if that made a positive difference.

You paid them £72 to sit the switchgear on a radiator. They saw you coming! Laughing

Cheers for the replies. I'll take a closer look at the switchgear tomorrow afternoon. In my naivety I was thinking it could only be an internal problem.

Thanks.

i made £75 that day Crying or Very sad

i really couldn't be arsed saying anything .

what pissed me of was a few months before when they fitted a new wiring loom & ecu , i was told they used loads of electrical grease on every connection to keep dampness out & stop the wires from rotting .

i checked a number of connections after the work was done & there was loads of grease on the ecu & other connections that i checked , this was about 4 months ago .

the bike was about 6 weeks out of warranty when it broke down again .

the engine cutting out while overtaking was the final straw for me ! its on autotrader now .
