Oil Filter Stuck!

Hi guys, went to do an oil change today for the first time and failed at the first hurdle.

Thought I'd try and crack the filter before letting all the oil drain out, and I failed.

You can see it almost looks rusted on. I'm worried it hasn't been off in a long time. What bloody monkey tightened that!

Have used brute force with just hands, a chain wrench tool that just wanted to dent and pierce it.. a special tool that clamps round it and all no luck.

Ideally I don't want to use the screwdriver method unless last resort.

I think I need to try and get those special pliers from halfrauds.

Would penetrating oil in the meantime do any good? I was worried it could actually get inside the filter? I've never used it before either.

Any ideas?

You can't really go wrong with the screwdriver method unless it is totally ruined anyway.

Do it about midway so if for some reason it doesn't work, there is still something to work with.

+1 on ramming a screw driver through it. If that fails your fucked rip it to shreds and peel the threads off.

On a really stuck one recently I used filter pliers and a chain wrench at the same time, one close to the joint with the engine and one halfway along, worked a treat.

In the past when some twerp has wound the filter on like his life depended upon it I've been reduced to using a slim 6" sharp cold chisel and a light hammer. Desperation I know but it worked. Bloody hate using hammers on bikes.

Used something similar to that to remove mine from the SV.
Apart from mine attached to a socket wrench Twisted Evil
Crushed the filter to hell, but it loosened it enough to remove by hand Thumbs Up

A screw driver would be a last resort for me, mainly because I know it's a last resort
I like knowing that other options are available Razz

Cheap method : wrap masking tape round it, turn it over frequently so the outside is sticky, this way you can get a good grip with your hands.

If it's on as tight as I think it is. You will need a chain tool. I use one on my bike. Well worth getting one for the price. Tip of the week, When fitting a new filter back, rub a smear of grease round the rubber gasket. The whole thing will after a few day's heat up and some-how grow. I then go back and give it a quarter turn off the thread. Make's life a lot easer to get off next time.

Probably not going to help. If the threads are seized then they are doing well, having been immersed in oil for ages, and are nowhere near the outside of the filter. The only thing the penetrating oil is going to reach is the rubber seal on the filter which is probably not going to be freed off by it.

Looking at that I'd +1 for the screwdriver if brute forcing it off with a filter wrench failed. Penetrating oil will be unlikely to help in a situation like this unfortunately.

The rust you can see is just rust on the collar of the filter. Personally I'd whack a scerw driver through it. Always been able to get mine off with the filter tool personally, even ones that have been done up by Heman.

Don't stab a screwdriver in it.

My CBR had a similarly stuck filter when I first bought it, screwdriver hammered in near the base still tore it open and I was left with a stub attached to the cooler. In the end, used a chisel on the rim of the fitler to get it to turn.


I'd use a filter cup type removal tool if I had another stuck filter.

In the past I've found using a cut up anti slip mat for grip good enough for getting the filter moving where it wouldn't just by hand. When that hasn't worked, the hammer and screw driver come out.

Cup socket removal things can end up just skipping over the flats on the filter.

I have a filter chain tool, filter pliers and filter locking wrench.

There wasn't enough clearance to use the chain tool. I couldn't get the filter pliers to grip hard enough, ended up using them as pincers, almost stabbing the oil filter.

But now I have an oil filter locking wrench, basically mole grips with wider jaws, like these ones (American, first search result):
