Advise pls.. Dt 125cc full power.

Hi I'm intrested in buying a dt 125cc 52 reg... Full power (powe valve)
I'm on a cbt licence I'm over 40 yrs old
I was told I wasn't allowed to ride it under l plates
Is this true

Technically no you're not allowed to ride them. I think full power ones are 20 bhp or possibly more which is more than the limit of 14.6. Doubt it would ever matter but it's your risk to take. I had a full power DTR while on a CBT, then a bike over 33bhp (just) on my restricted license and I didn't die or kill any kittens.

My main concern on a DTR that old would be condition, it's bound to have been hammered unless it's a mature owner. What is the milage? And if high has it had a rebuild? They are good engines but like all 2 strokes need attention eventually. I think the highest mileage one I had heard of on the original top end was around 20k which is decent I reckon if the lad wasn't lying anyway.

You also need to find out if the powervalve actually works properly. If it is when you turn the key you'll hear a double 'bzzt! bzzt!' sound which is the valve opening and closing to clean itself.

Unfortunately nine times out of ten some chavmong will have interfered with it thinking they are derestricting it and locked it open. This results in a bike with all the power coming in at the top end and very sluggish low down.

The servo's and cables are not too hard to find though. As far as I know, Yamaha used the same servo for all YPVS bikes, TZR125/250,TDR125/250, RD 350, 500, R1Z and SDR.

Even on my TZR's they have 2 tracks to fit 2 sets of PV cables, obviously for the RD500.

On a 52 plate it'll have the pv and gubbins fitted. To restrict it...go to your local Yamaha dealer...they plug in a box and it sets your servo to restricted and they will give you a certificate to say its now learner legal.( no actual requirement for the certificate)....that's all totally legal job done......however I'm guessing your a full licence holder and experienced road user....the extra hp sure makes them a bit more manageable on NSL roads hills and head winds!

DT and KMX 125's were in my mind the best of the learner legal 125's as reliable as a 4t but with more torque and the added advantage of green lane fun and both easily derestricted to 85mph without much effort

Just make sure it's been looked after.
