when i bought my bike the calipers had no pads in - so i have nothing to work from...

when im fitting pads do i need clips, backing plates or anything?

also the front of the pads has a square notch that im guesing must locate in the caliper somehow, can anyone explain how it stays in place in the caliper

cheers all

The tab on the pad fits into the notch in the caliper, and a pin fits through the hole in the other end of the pad to secure it.

My calipers are like that. You have to push the two parts of the caliper on the pins to make the step appear that the pads sit on. It'll be obvious when you start moving the caliper on the pins what I'm on about.

Take the pad out and pull that bit in the middle until it pops the rubbers off. Underneath you'll find two pins that your red arrows are pointing at. They will need cleaning and greasing.

Give the pistons a good scrub with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush, rinse off and dry with brake cleaner.
I've just done mine. Thumbs Up

If you're going to do it right, you need to get the pistons out, carefully remove the seal in the caliper body that sat behind the pistons, and scrape out any alloy corrosion (fluffy white shit) from behind the seal.

The alloy corrodes and pushes the seal in against the piston, so the piston can't move freely.

Also worth cleaning the piston up, I tend to use a finishing pad or high-grit emery paper used very carefully.

Of course, when you're doing this work then it's also worth getting the outside of the caliper really clean, getting any corrosion out from behind shims and the like.

This is part of why I hate getting new (second hand) bikes. A simple brake pad change ends up taking all day and costing far more than just a set of pads. Do end up with sharp brakes though.

cheers boys n girls

well found out it was the left hand side caliper that is dragging

popped the pistons out, an they were pretty clean - after that i gave up (i ran outta brake cleaner)

hopefully going to attack the pesky caliper tonight

can you reuse the seals? i will clean them first an check condition etc

Yeah you can re-use the seals if your budget doesn't stretch to new ones. I have done it many times.
