COPY PASTA FROM MY MKIV FORUM THREAD (MK 4 golf S '98)

Just about had enough of this car now, enjoyed fixing the little things that break on the car but now every single day off I get I'm out fixing something on this POS car.

NOW

My major problem, I have spent the last 2 days going through every thread on the internet about this and not one thread is conclusive.

I have no:

Central locking
Boot opener
Glove box light
Windows are stuck open (turned the key to the right today to open the window so I can open the drivers door (outside handle snapped, now I can't close it)
No noise if lights are left on
No horn

and other stuff that I have forgotten probably

Now you're all shouting check fuse 14! I have and it was fine however I have replaced it anyway just to keep you all happy Razz

No difference.

Took the drivers footwell apart and got the CCM out and inspected it here are the pics (looks fine but will replace anyway)
Since taking the ccm out and putting it back in, I can no longer press the lock button (near the window button) as it does nothing, before it would make the posts jump up and down and sometimes lock 2 or 3 doors sometime just 1, really random.

I also read somewhere that a break in the left hand side boot wires (similar to the common de misters issue which I've also had to fix!) so I had a look and it wasn't broken but there were exposed wires touching, so I checked fuse 14 and all the other again to see if I blew them while repairing and they were fine.

I think I have replaced every 10 amp mini and normal sized fuses and checked all the others with a MM. Alarmingly there was 30a fuse in no.14 do you think this could of fried the ccm? Think it gets its power from the dome fuse IIRC.

So other than changing the CCM which I will next week, what else can I do? This car is making me rage so badly

The circuit board there looks fine. If it had been fried it wouldn't look so clean.

Stop chasing black boxes. Black boxes are the most reliable part of a vehicle wiring system. They are also the most easily blamed, because they're easy to find and hard to test, whilst being expensive enough to blame without replacing.

You have already found some wires shorting on each other. Time to look for more. Work out where the wiring for all the broken bits intersects in the loom or shares a common earth point.

My best guess is that all those things, or a switch controlling those things, earths through the chassis at one point. That earth point is not connected, either because the bolt has unscrewed or the wire has broken. For extra bollocks points, the wire has broken but is occasionally coming into contact with the chassis allowing the bits to work briefly.

I would expect all of those things to rely on an earth point somewhere behind the centre console, for extra difficulty.

Now be honest, what have you done to the car recently to make it misbehave? Fitted a new radio and randomly pulled at some wires while you were doing it? Changed the pollen filter with a hammer?

I feel your pain. Apart from the horn, my bike also has all those problems.

When you are trying to figure out whether or not a black box full of electronics is working properly or not, the easiest solution is to borrow a known working one and try that rather than tringing to test the suspect one.

There is a chance that you will blow the known working one and now have to buy two of them , but yeah, at least you know that thats not the problem.

Common fault on the VT750 shadow isn't?

Only issue is they changed after my year, so I'll probably buy one if I can't find any dodgey earths. Apparently a bad CCM can come up on VAGCOM diagnostic so will get hold of one of them.

Find someone with the real vcds and get the car scanned, vws are too complicated for their own good sometimes but that means it normally logs a code. I believe a second hand module will need to be coded in using vcds anyway. If you dont mind a road trip i have vcds at work.

If I get the same part number, I don't think it does, only if it has remote control locking which mine doesn't.

Should hopefully be borrowing my friends, if not I'd really appreciate it Thumbs Up

In the nicest way possible, it's a 16 year old golf that's shit anyway. Is it not easier to sell it on cheap and just buy something else if it's giving you this many problems ?

I had a mk4 gti last year for about 3 months and had to sell it on as it was falling apart too. Terrible cars, never ending issues

So something's changed between taking the unit out for inspection and putting it back in.

Assuming it's not the CCM that's changed the most likely thing I'd think is disturbed wiring.

Yeah probably will do, spent more than I bought it for on lowering it, wheels etc etc

Won't be doing that next time Laughing

Any chance you can have a poke around with a multimeter? Takes all the guess work away. Check for power at the CCM (both 12v and earth at the connector because it could be a shit ground as mentioned) then go from there. Have you got/can you get a wiring diagram?

I had the same problem with my Mrs' Passat estate after it was rear ended but mine was a simple fix as the rear interior light bulb had dislodged and shorted between +ve and -ve taking the fuse with it. Unfortunately for me the car was deadlocked and the drivers door lock is fucked so I had to back feed the CCM through the interior light to open the door so I could change the fuse, ballache.

a car should last way longer than that, too many fucken electrics on modern cars, they make out like its a good thing but really its just a way of getting you so fucked off with a car you'll just buy a new one,

bring back carburetors and manual windows, traction control and air bags can suck my balls, abs and air con are just a have,

I'll have another go, only common earth I can think of that was mentioned was one that runs through the head lining. 2 that run down the pillars and a big one in the engine bay runs to the gearbox

Wiring diagram has confused the hell out of me, will hopefully get poking around with a MM again on Monday Thumbs Up

al least you have a wiring diagram.....take your time...look for "commonality".......you have checked for voltage at the fuse box??

find out the air bag system and wires, you do not want to add them to your list or make them go bang!!

take your time and be logical.

you will end up knowing more specifics than the main dealer!

If you link me to the wiring diagrams I'll have a go at simplifying them and sorting you some kind of basic test procedure out Thumbs Up

Bikenut is right, wiring is (however much you disagree!) completely logical, you just have to work with it until it clicks with you.

double check every fuse on the battery mate, one of the large wires comes off that fuse box there and feeds the inside of the car, it then feeds from a busbar type thing behind the dash to feed the various control units and the fuse box, you need to check you have power everywhere and if you get a scan pay attention to any terminal 30 faults as they are 12v feed faults.

Funny that as i run a mk4 gti and so does a mate and neither of us has had any issues in the last year Thumbs Up

Like any make of car just make sure you buy a good one to start with, vw's are reliable and fairly easy to work on, they are German ffs Laughing

You do know one push of door key usually opens drivers door and two pushes open all? Childlock switch on? Sounds like you have a dirty or badly connected earth wire and a dirty fuse box tbh.
