2003 FZS600 Fazer.
Couple of times recently the starter's just made a clickity clickity sound on the first few attempts to start. So what's likely to be on it's death bed and how do I fix it?

Probably (and hopefully) worn bushes/brushes (I've seen both terms used).
You'll need to remove and take apart to check.

For a hint do a search for CB500 starter on here. I suspect (although not checked) the likes of WEMoto will have replacement parts. If the starter hasn't welded itself to the engine and can be removed it's a relatively easy fix.

I have similar issue on the CB500 (hence why I know solution posted here). Occasionally hit starter and it just clicks. Put in 2nd gear and rock forward (similar to push start but not used to start). Then hit starter and fires up.

Best of luck Thumbs Up

Had similar last year on my 2001 Fazer, but mine was sticking and I had to rock the bike backwards while in gear to free it off, anyhow I found a replacement second hand one on eBay for £15 and job was a good'un, still got it fitted with no more issues, worth trying if you're sure it's the starter motor at fault

I would look at your battery first before tampering with your starter motor, also check the starter solenoid for wear and good connections, also check the battery connections.

FWIW issue with my CB500 is worse when battery low. I think I need a new one but need to check reg/rec is charging first as I don't want to get battery and find it gets knackered.

However, that aside with the solution being to push it forward in gear and then the electrics start I'd check the starter.

My gut feeling is it's the starter, the battery turns the engine over fairly quickly once the starter engages. That said, since the bike was nine years old with only 2,500 miles on the clock when I bought it the battery could well be the ancient original.

Remember that if you keep turning a motor from a half shagged battery/starter motor, you will probably also shag the sprag clutch.
