Hi,

I'm looking at replacing the Michelin Pilot Road (1s) on my zzr1100. They have done 6200 miles of motorways and are now a, squared off badly, and b, low on tread anyway. Their replacements will have a similar life.
I'm looking towards a set of Pilot Road 2s, but have been considering the Maxxi range, driven mainly by price. Is this a false economy in the opinion of the mighty BCF? Are they likely to spit me into a ditch at the first opportunity, or be buggered in 1000 miles? I was considering replacing like for like but they seem tricky to source PR1s now, especially in the 120-70 and 170-60 sizes the battlebus uses.

Thanks all!

did you mean Maxxis?
they are made by Cheng Shin tyres.
the biggest tyre manufacture in the world...
of bicycle tyres!
put it this way, my Chinese 125 had Cheng Shin tyres on it.

Think I was looking at them. I've got pilot roads on and tbh I'm not very happy with them. They seems to skip about a bit when ridden hard but there's no tread in the middle. Yes this is good for dry riding but I commute on mine AND play on it at the weekend.

I was looking at the super max tourers. Also a Dunlop one I think but dunno which. Son in law is a bike tester and tyre fitter so I will hand it to him and pay the cash. But I will want treat that crosses the centre as these pilots don't like harsh braking and gear changes in anything other than Mediterranean weather!

maxxis tyres on dirt are hard to beat not sure about their road tyres though, the newer pilot road 3s are fantastic though

I ran my ZZR1100 on Maxxis superdiamonds. They were OK for a budget tyre - BUT I only got 4500 out of the rear and the front had scalloped badly in the same mileage!
That was far better than the 3000 I was getting out of the Pilot Power 2CT's (and let's just say that I like to use as much of the rubber and what's beneath it Wink ) before I replace them.

Great news that you got 6500 out of the Pilot roads as I've now got a mark 1 on the rear and a 3 on the front Very Happy

Edit: Unless you've owned one you won't appreciate how these beasts eat tyres, chains, sprockets and fork seals!!!

I've used several sets of Sportsmaxx on my VFR750. No real complaints.

My current tyres, the pr1s I'd rate as reasonable. They're not the best, especially in the wet, but equally they're not the worst either. Average might be a good word - but they've now been superseded three times! They aren't sold as cutting edge rubber....

There is no shortage of 120/70/17 PR1's, look on ebay, New are £65 delivered. However Im about to fit some part worn/ almost new PR3's that cost £60 and £30... 4mm tread on each.

As for rear tyre it may be worth asking a professional if you can fit a more common size, like 180/55 - quite likely your rim is the correct size for one. The rim width is usally stamped on the spokes.

....meh Wink
They are better than the superdiamonds, I did have them break loose a couple of times on the rear end! I have put over 3000 on the rear PR1 now and it's just squaring off now. The PR3 was fitted a little later as my budget was tight and I scrubbed it in on the night the Dawlish rail line washed away. Worst weather I've ever biked in and absolutely no grief from either of the PR's (rear chicken strips about 2mm just to give you some idea of the way they've been pushed!)

The road legal intermediate block pattern supermoto one I had on my CCM was atrocious. The first time I crashed I put it down to my twattishness, despite an aging trail sized front tyre doing fine in the same situation.

When it let go braking gently on shell grip I worked out the tyre just sucked.

The 170/60s are the trickier thing. They are on eBay, but I'm going to have to get this set supplied and fitted by a shop, much though it pains me!
Although with some of the comedy prices that I've been quoted (£215 fitted, for tyres that cost £150 on the bay of e's!!!), I'm rethinking my plan...

(Edit, there's a 180 on there now. That may be replaced with another!)

What model have you got? All the D series should be on a 185/55-17 as standard

C1, 1990.
Should be a 170 according to the original owners guide...

That's right for the C series (and the D's should be 180's, stupid typo on my part!). The 2CT's were definitely the best tyres I've run on to date but I'll be sticking with tourers in future, the sports rubbers wear far too quickly. The PR1 can be a bit vague on the edge but if you can stretch to it I'd recommend the PR3's all day long if the rear is as good as the front.

Are the pr3s not more fast road based rather than sports tour?
I fear that pr3s would just be wasted on the M6 trudge! (350 miles a week, of which 340 is on dual carriage ways or m'ways!)

I understood them to be a touring tyre, an upgrade to the PR1's and PR2's, but I may be wrong. They look odd for a sports tyre.

I used to run Maxxxis Supermaxx Sport on the R6, had awesome grip, but they were a very soft compoud, and although the tyre was fantastic, the life was quite short.

I ran a set of CST ( Cheng Shin Tyres ) Adreno's on my zx6.

I had no idea what they were doing, but they seemed to grip well enough in all conditions. Even on a trackday.

Managed some 10.000miles from the rear also.

If your after somthing for long distance, motorway work, they are pretty good for the money! When I bought them they were £100 a pair in 120/70 and 180/55.

i like them in the dry.

had them on the turbo bandit, they put up with abuse at 14psi for a good 1500 miles.

got a set on the mille now, once they've got a bit of warm in them there good, spin up a bit when cold.

they're shit in the wet though.

I had Conti Road Attack on my c2, were cheaper than Maxxis on a pair deal, and did over 2000 miles, mostly motorway 2up in Europe and looked like they'd do the same again easily- worked well on my R1100RS too-they seem to suit big heavy bikes.

Oh, I dont know; as a VF1000 pilot when that was to the big z what the big z became to a Busa...., and Z owners frowned at how many miles I didn't get from tyre's chains, sprockets and wheel bearings, I have a reasonable 'apreciation' Wink
So does e-bay! Every time I log on, its suggesting I might like pages of adverts for ZZR parts!?!? I have no idea why, other than perhaps, Nick, who lives eight doors away, has some-how managed to hack my broad-band and is using my e-bay account to finish his long term ZZR resto!

Well, having had a couple of local dealers quote a fair bitter higher and not be able to source a pair of PR1s for a reasonable price I've settled on a pair of PR2s, fitted to loose wheels for £200. Yes, Maxxis are a few pounds cheaper but Ill be interested in how the 2s fare.
