Took a while in the shop, trying a number of different types as the Frank Thomas ones I got 18 months ago were no longer available. I liked those as the first time I put my foot in them, they fitted. I ended up with these. £120 in J&S so not too bad. A little bit stiffer but I like that. Only trouble is now riding, I'm missing gears. My foot isn't able to quite engage with the shifter at the right angle as easily as before. Time to adjust lever? Seems odd to have to adjust the lever for a different pair of boots.

Astars make the best boots in my opinion, mine are so comfy

I had some HG boots that were very comfy and waterproof, but only lasted about a year. I'll keep them as my summer (or at least dry) boots.
I'd buy them again if they still had a shop in Brisle.

I have had my Alpinestars SMX-5 boots for a year now (got them just before last year's Mayday ride) and they were very stiff to start off with. So much so, that even nowhere.elysium noticed I was missing gears and having trouble on the way to Box Hill.

They softened up pretty quickly and now they feel like a second skin. It's just getting used to the new shape and the way they feel with the bike gear shifter.

You will be fine, honestly, just keep using them Very Happy

Less of the 'even', thank you. Folded arms

I've got a pair of A* SMX-5s, and a pair of Sidi Couriers, and the Sidis get far more use. They're both good sets of boots, but I definitely prefer the Sidis.

Ha, I mean't 'even' as in it was obvious to see my difficulty even from another rider's perspective Laughing

Alpinestars boots are the best I've ever tried on, and I tried on about 20 pairs of varying brands in store.

Didn't fancy spending £360 on some new Supertech Rs though so I got them second hand off ebay. Guy had bought them online, thought they fitted when he tried them on at home so threw out the box, said they were too loose and uncomfortable on the bike though so only worn once.

I found they were quite stiff at first too, and I found I'd have to pigeon toe sometimes which meant I'd miss the gear, but loosened up a fair bit and now they're perfect.

Just persevere with them mate, I got a new pair of sidi's to replace the existing ones so same boot exactly, still took over a week for them to soften up and mould to my foot shape.

SMX-5 have toe sliders, these looks like the Drystar boots.

10 points for you.

In all fairness, when I got my first boots I was completely new to bikes, so I was getting comfortable with riding, let alone the gear I was wearing. Maybe I am making a bit much of it and it will sort itself out. Was just worried I'd spent £120 on something I wouldn't like. I was ok on the way home, but I do feel I have to be more positive on a gear change, thinking about it, rather than doing it.

I've got a pair of sidi apex and a-stars SMX-6, and because i don't like the all black gimp suit look, i've got them both in white. The sidi's are short boots, and look like trainers from a distance, especially when worn with textiles/kevlar jeans. Both were a bit tight on one foot, but, being leather, have stretched, and now fit like a dream.

I just need to give them a wipe, the white bits properly show up the dirt.
